Album Review

This is a classic session with Hank Williams assuming the role of Luke the Drifter. These stunning narratives will surely conjure up images of campfires and Sundays at the chapel. The selections are backed by organ, steel guitar, or his own acoustic guitar strumming, which has always been overlooked. Old favorites such as "Men with Broken Hearts," "I've Been Down That Road Before," and "Beyond the Sunset" are all treated with special care, but "The Funeral" is the session's most stirring moment. It is hard to believe that Hank Williams was still in his twenties (he died when he was 29) when this music was recorded. He is an American treasure and this is one of his most enduring recordings. [Mercury's 1994 reissue included two bonus tracks.]

Some of his best

These recordings as "Luke the Drifter" are some of Hanks' most prophetic, and moving songs of his career. There are no "Hony Tonks" here, just some very soulful and insightful ballads. Hank had a great understand of life and death, and pain and sorrow, as well human injustice. Just listen to "Men w/Broken Hearts" , "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night", and "Beyond the Sunset", and if you aren't moved by those, than you just don't have soul.

Not his Hits, but . . .

In 1950, Hank Sr. began recording under the pseudonym Luke the Drifter. These recordings were narrations (traditions in country music), sermon-like, filled with compassion and morality. They represent another side of Hank Sr. not to be confused with his hits. In fact, he used this "pseudonym" so that you wouldn't hit a Hank Sr. hit on the jukebox and get a sermon. But these might grant a closer look at the "true" Hank Sr.

Not Much Singin'

I was dissappointed that much of this album consists of Hank talking (mostly stories warning against sin) over his guitar playing. Not much time is spent singing, in praise or in anything particularly pleasant to listen to.
