iTunes Review

The first decade of the 21st century birthed a new collective unconscious of various heavy metal revivalists. Skeletonwitch initially flew under the radar of bands like proto-metal faves the Sword, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal disciples Saviours, and ‘80s thrash devotees Annihilation Time. By their second album they were inadvertently carving out an anti-niche by refusing to adhere to just one microcosm. Beyond the Permafrost found the Athens, Ohio quintet blending a brutal brew of all things evil, heavy, discordant and shredding. “Upon Wings of Black” rips the head off their sophomore offering with lightning leads, hyper seizures of rhythm and a demonic-sounding singer in Chance Garnette who spews possessed inflections reminiscent of those corpse-painted, church-burning, black-metal frontmen from Norway. The title track starts off sludgy before Garnette hits a deeper and more sinister tone — sounding as if he drank the devil’s blood and barfed up hot lava while the tape was rolling. “Fire from The Sky’s” driving riffs recall early Metallica before Garnette conjures the kind of blood- curdling screams that nightmares are made of.

Evil So Good

I recently discovered Skeletonwitch, and they represent the best parts of metal. I can't get enough, I feel like listening to them will make me sprout black leathery wings at any second. The buildup to the solo in "Upon Wings of Black" makes me tingle with anticipation every time, and a headbanging flurry ensues. Buy this, and then buy Breathing the Fire. I already can't wait for the next album.

Fantastic

There are a lot of bands out there in this new thrash metal revival, but skeletonwitch is one of the few that is doing something really new and interesting. They combine the best of black metal, old school thrash, and melodic death into one great album. The best track on the album is Fast Into the Open Sea but I would reccomend buying the whole album.

Although they only came together as a band in 2003, the members of Athens, Ohio's Skeletonwitch draw the bulk of their inspiration from artists and musical styles born all of two decades earlier — namely the undying flame of classic, Bay Area thrash, its creative bedrock in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and, to a lesser degree, death, black, and Viking metal. First introduced via 2004's independently released At One with the Shadows album, and 2006's Worship the Witch EP, Skeletonwitch's...
