Album Review

Murderdolls are a side project for Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison and Static-X guitarist Tripp Eisen and a band that Jordison envisioned long before their 2002 debut release. Those who followed the band in their former incarnation as the Rejects will notice that Wednesday 13, who was once the bassist, has now moved behind the mic, yet the intentions here remain the same: creating fast, macabre music that is nothing like the music around it. Drawing lyrical inspiration from movies such as Friday the 13th, Night of the Living Dead, and Phantasm, the 15 tracks included on Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls are full of tongue-in-cheek horror clichés. Jordison performs without the mask he is known for wearing as part of Slipknot, and instead of residing behind the drumkit, he is ready to rock as one member of the powerful guitar duo, accompanied by the aforementioned Eisen. While it is obvious neither man wished for this group to resemble their other duties, Murderdolls instead find themselves stuck in a time warp that hurtles them backwards to the decayed sounds of the '80s. Call it gutter-punk, glam rock, or hair metal, every style is displayed here in its despondent glory, bearing close comparisons to shock-punkers the Misfits. As such, this debut makes for an entertaining, often hilarious punk metal collection that never once can be taken seriously. If Murderdolls are a joke, then these men have succeeded, and if this is serious...well let's just stick with believing Murderdolls are an extravagant prank on the music industry. ~ Jason D. Will last for years to come.

The formulation of Murderdolls started back around the time of Slipknot's Iowa, in 2001/2002. The Rejects, the earlier incarnation of Murderdolls, started before Slipknot. This is why it should come as no surprise that Beyond the Valley was released: it was going to happen eventually, one way or another. A big misconception about the recording of this album was that the whole band was intact during the process. Wednesday and Joey did it themselves (we won't count Tripp in this because he just doesn't count) entirely, then added in the other members. So what you're listening to is the pure, unaltered brainchild of the dynamic duo. Wednesday's twisted humor and horror-movie lyrics + Joey's talent = pure genius. Every song is amazing; I couldn't sing the praises of any particular songs without discrediting the others. I truly believe this album will stand the test of time, which is what the Murderdolls were going for. Whether or not it will stand the test of time with its audiences is a whole 'nother story. But I can see myself blasting this cd when I'm 70, and I think every other true Murderdolls fan would say the same thing. It's questionable whether or not the band will reform in the future, and my honest answer is no. The band members have definitely moved on, and I don't think that's a bad thing. That way, this record will live on and leave behind a legend of its own.

HAHAA

Leave it to Wednesday and Joey to make a Clean Lyric album but not take out the cuss words. Haha. You guys rock.

JOEY JORDISON ROCKS!!!!

I cant believe Joey Jordison is as good at guitar as he is drums!!He's incredibly gifted/talented. Definetly get this album.

Murderdolls are a collaboration between Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison (who moved over to guitar for this project) and Static-X guitarist Tripp Eisen. Landing somewhere between the aggressive throb of rap-metal and the energetic charge of hardcore punk, Murderdolls formed when the two toured together during the 1999 Ozzfest. Drafting singer Wednesday 13, bassist Eric Griffin, and drummer Ben Graves into the mix, the band recorded and released Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls in 2002. The album...
