Musical bliss

Bhakti Bazaar is a beautiful album of richly layered songs. Each song builds slowly, which makes them perfect for yoga or meditation. I especially love to listen to Shyama Bolo. Listening to samples of these songs surely won't do them justice. Buy the entire album, and let the songs wash over you. Bliss!

How does he keep doing it?

Rocking Jazzing Bhakti Jai style. I can get lost in this music. It supports my yoga and qo cong practices. It's also great for cooking, driving, sitting. Upbeat music that is deeply grounded in the Heart. Thanks Jai.

Bazaar is a good analogy for this album..

Let me start by saying Jai Uttal is great, one of my favorite musicians! However his vocal arrangements, to me, are either dead on or sort of off. Songs like "Durga Pahimam" off of his album "Kirtan!", "Ganesha Windmix" off "Dial M for Mantra" and "Nataraja" off "Music for Yoga and Other Joys" (another collaboration with Ben Leinbach) are just a few of his truly unbelievable creations. Others don't quite do it for me. Bhakti Bazaar is kind of like a real-life bazaar. You will find some beautiful treasures, and you will find some less desirable stuff. The songs are long and winding, with a lot of sections and arrangements. Rama Bolo especially demonstrates it. The first section is gorgeous, sacred, and Jai's arrangements for those verses gave me goosebumps they were so good. Then the song drifts to a kind of funky electric guitar solo, which is still good, but different from how it begins. Then it breaks into a full-on reggae beat. Then a few other transitions which struck me as jarring. And it kind of ends a bit suddenly. The other tracks feel more consistent in comparison, but still there is a feeling of meandering through a bazaar of sounds, finding some things you love immediately, and other things you could live without. Still, if you are a Jai Uttal fan or just a kirtan lover in general you should definitely take a nice long stroll through Bhakti Bazaar!
