On its debut for MCA, Venus Hum exudes a dark, lush dream pop sound on Big Beautiful Sky. Rich synth beats and layered percussion soak up this shimmery collection that's tailored for the indie and dance crowds alike, so prepare for a hypnotic headtrip. Vocalist Annette Strean offers warm, honeyed vocals, while her bandmates, Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle, are fashionably slick with their digital instrumentation. "Hummingbirds" is an electric new wave storm of luminous lyrical depictions, while "Montana" and "Lumberjacks" shimmy with sparkling keyboard hooks for divine club/dance standouts. Threads of Depeche Mode, Yaz, and Björk swirl throughout, allowing Big Beautiful Sky to compose its own bright musical sound, a passionate effort without losing itself in what's already been done in the past. The funky edge of "Sonic Boom" is a testament to Venus Hum's kitschy electronic twist. Big Beautiful Sky doesn't do anything dramatically different from what's popular on the dance front, but Venus Hum keeps things honest.

Venus Hum, rare, but good...

Not many people know about Venus Hum, but they definitely rock. I'm a guy and Venus Hum is one of my guilty pleasures. "Honey" has words that I don't understand, but it's cool. "Sonic Boom" is like... cool. "Lumberjacks" is... interesting. "Wordless May" is very good. "Soul Sloshing" is innovative. "Bella Luna" is girly (but one of my favorites, I'm not gonna lie). It's a mixed bag. There's probably a lot you will love to death, but some of it will confuse you. There are unspoken rules of being a guy that say I'm not supposed to enjoy this kind of music, but I love this album because I've never been a fan of unspoken rules.

Addictive!!!

After attending a Blue Man Group Show and seeing Venus Hum perform, this was a must-have CD. Unfortunately, I left my disc holder on plane. This was the first that was replaced and the first added to my library once I got an IPOD. Venus Hum is truly unique. This collection is required for a diverse and complete library. I greatly anticipate all future works.

Nashville, TN, might not be the first place for a dream pop band to come together, but the birthplace of American music was a nice fit for Venus Hum. Comprised of vocalist Annette Strean and multi-instrumentalists Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle, the trio formed in 1999. Strean, who grew up with a logger father in Whitefish, MT, found Nashville to be her cultural calling. She grew up singing show tunes for fun, but her fondness for the Cure and Kate Bush pushed her creatively. Strean fell for kitschy...
