Billy Preston's Beatles Salute

Billy Preston died today here in Scottsdale. If there was one artist on earth who could render a salute to his friends, the Beatles, it was Billy. His career reads like a Route 66 of music- from Gospel, to "Shindig", to touring with Little Richard and meeting the Beatles in Hamburg, recording with everyone from the Rolling Stones, to Eric Clapton, George Harrison, the Beatles, and an absolute "Who's Who" of contemporary music, it's Billy. Billy was THE man when it came to the Hammond B3/Leslie...no matter who played those slidebars, it was Billy who set the standard, laughed as his feet danced across the pedals (and shook the biggest Afro on TV)...it was always Billy. Billy's legacy is unmatchable- there will never be another Billy. If Ray was alive, he'd probably agree; if Jimi was alive, he'd agree, if George was still with us...they'd all agree: Billy was keyboards from his soul to his smile. Godspeed to you, Billy- every musician you touched was better, every song you graced was brighter...Heaven's going to be a lot more wonderful with you smiling up there...spin up those Leslies: Billy's coming home. The Hammondmeister, Forever

So sad to hear that this great purveyor of the Hammond organ, funky soul sound and deep, reach-out-and-grab-you voice is gone. I saw him at what was his final performance, American Idol in 2005, playing a sleek, sexy duet with Vonzell Solomon. A beautiful, worthy five minutes of music on the Kodak Theater stage. These three songs remind us of what he meant to The Beatles. Mick Jagger will tell anyone what he meant to the Stones. A few years ago, he showed what George Harrison meant to him with his brilliant rendition of "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't It A Pity?" on the Harrison tribute concert DVD. I hope his friends will perform a benefit in his honor. Your music will live forever, Billy Preston.

We miss you billy pay your tribute man!!!

Billy Preston realy ripped this. He took the greatest band in the world and made them soul, jazz, and Funk. And it's good. Realy good. Billy, we miss you. Rock on in world of Unity and rythm.

It's advantageous to get an early start on your chosen career, but Billy Preston took the concept to extremes. By age ten he was playing keyboards with gospel diva Mahalia Jackson, and two years later, in 1958, he was featured in Hollywood's film bio of W.C. Handy, St. Louis Blues, as young Handy himself. Preston was a prodigy on organ and piano, recording during the early '60s for Vee-Jay and touring with Little Richard. He was a loose-limbed regular on the mid-'60s ABC TV series Shindig, proving...
