Album Review

The Cowboy Junkies' Black-Eyed Man is an excellent return to form following their disappointing third LP, The Caution Horses. Where Michael Timmins' songwriting was stilted and overly self-conscious on the previous record, here his character studies are literate and finely-etched; like Robbie Robertson before him, Timmins' Canadian roots allow him to view the rural American experience with unique objectivity, and narratives like the opening "Southern Rain" and "Murder, Tonight, in the Trailer Park" are told with compassion and cinematic detail. Black-Eyed Man also broadens the Junkies' musical horizons: "If You Were the Woman and I Was the Man," a duet with John Prine, is like a '50s-era love song intercepted from an alternate reality; while tracks like the lilting "A Horse in the Country" push the group closer to the folk-pop territory of 10,000 Maniacs. At the same time, their country roots are further reinforced by a pair of outstanding Townes Van Zandt covers, "Cowboy Junkies Lament" and "To Live Is to Fly"; sandwiched between them is Timmins' own tribute, "Townes' Blues."

A keeper

This is an album I keep returning to over the years. Really just over all a great album; it goes between being just lovely ("Winter's Song") to a lot of fun ("Cowboy Junkies Lament").

Black Eyed Man -Cowboy Junkies

Of all Michael and his family's work, This is perhaps the best of the fest so to speak. Lay it Down a close second, if not tied for the top slot..The vocals by Margot Timmins reflect the lyric of her brother perfectly- soulful, introverted, observant, objective, and reflective- Black Eyed Man, Oregon Hill, and Murder Tonight in the Trailer Park are the most perfectly exe3cuted examples of the Junkies style- clean, beautifully arranged and powerfully delivered. The album is not without foibles though- If I were teh woman,Thisd Street,Thjat Man..- horrible but naked examples of a writer trying to be a musician and in comparison to Lay it Down, can't hold a candle to any of the music on the album..If you had to choose, Buy a fes songs off Black Eyed Man, and buy the entire Lay it Down..You;ll be glad you did..If you can go to a live performance..again, you'll be glad you were there..

Still great

I bought this cassette when I was in the 7th or 8th grade. I haven't heard it in years. This is a great album

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Although it didn't originally have anything to do with their sound, the Cowboy Junkies' name wound up seeming pretty accurate: their music was grounded in traditional country, blues, and folk, yet drifted along in a sleepy, narcotic haze that clearly bore the stamp of the Velvet Underground. The vast majority of their songs were spare and quiet, taken at lethargic tempos and filled with languid guitars and detached, ethereal vocals courtesy of Margo Timmins....
