Album Review
In keeping with the cosmological phenomenon of the title, this is John Barry in big, bold terms — there is certainly no mistaking the style, with its swirling string figures and forceful horns. Unfortunately, Disney have never seen fit to accommodate a CD release of the film's music (perhaps because the film itself was such an expensive embarrassment to the company), rendering the vinyl release an expensive collector's item. John Barry fans will note that the music includes something not often seen from Barry — an overture. A Childhood Memento
I saw this film twice as a child in an antique one screen theater. At the time 1979, I disliked the film because it seemed to be a Star Wars imitation. For example, the comic "droids" Vincent and Bob were like R2-D2 and C3P0. So I watched the film again recently on 5.1 DVD some 26 years later and I found the film to be a smashing bore except for one element: John Barry's music. Some of us who are intimate with the film scoring art understand that film composition is an invisible art and that film composers come in late in the film production process and are often overlooked or ignored for their contributions. This is not the case on "The Black Hole". Barry created a musical score that surpassed the artistry of the film. I hear a new creative direction for Barry on cues like "Into The Hole" (my favorite track) with experimental sweeping electronic sounds although he did something similar on "Star Crash" and continued to dabble in electronics on films such as "The Calling" and "Jagged Edge" in the early to mid-80s. From 1976 to 1979 is an interesting musical era for Barry. It's a period of accelerated musical output that I return to again and again. Scores he composed such as "The Deep", "King Kong", and "Moonraker". Although I feel Barry's creative pinnacle was from 1968 through 1971. 1971 was undoubtedly Barry's miracle year. "The Black Hole" however is a highlight of his second greatest era although Barry himself would probably say that he was "jobbing it" during the late 70s. Thanks to everyone who work thanklessly behind-the-scenes to make this release a reality. And thanks to Maestro Barry, you may be in film scoring exile but you are not forgotten.
In, Through, And Beyond.
Having been the first soundtrack I ever purchased on LP as a child, I find that The Black Hole still holds my heart captive some 25 years later. Every time I listen to Barry's captivating strings and horns I am unable to just listen to a single track, but am forced to play the entire score from beginning to end. This online-only release is a welcome one to this longtime fan, so here's to 25 more years of enjoyment and the hopes that an expanded CD will someday find a release.
A gorgeous, haunting film score finally gets its due
Despite being on the cutting edge of visual effects upon its release in 1979, "The Black Hole" as a film hasn't exactly aged gracefully. Not so John Barry's score for the film: By turns mysterious, dramatic and soaringly lyrical, it's one of his best, and it hasn't lost an ounce of its dark, eerie beauty. Unfortunately, when the film hit theaters, the score only received a meager release on LP, and it never got the CD reissue it deserved (bootleg CDs notwithstanding). Now, thanks to iTunes, it's finally seeing the light of day--and not a moment too soon. Fans of Barry's scores for "Moonraker," "Somewhere in Time" and "Dances With Wolves" (and fans of great film scores in general) are sure to be enthralled with this musical voyage into the unknown. Don't miss it.
