Either Muse singer Matthew Bellamy grew up idolizing the glitzy romance and bellowing caterwauls of popsingers such as Bryan Ferry, Bono and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, or there's an incredible coincidence goin' on — made even more pronounced by the fact that his group performs an attractive blend of arena-glam rock buttressed by fat synthesizer lines and excitably funky grooves that often recall the similar grandiose visions of the aforementioned. The Devon, UK group's fourth studio album, Black Holes, is put together and paced like an old school album, beginning with the introductory mood of "Take a Bow" and building toward crescendos that work most effectively heard in sequence. "Supermassive Black Hole" channels T. Rex and Prince and nicely dovetails into the U2 meets Depeche Mode shaker "Map of the Problematique." "Invincible"'s shimmering dreamlike quality recalls the pop patina of Travis' Radiohead-lite, setting up the purebred aggression of "Assassin," where Muse emulate a hard rock ensemble. It's this flexible ambition that allows the group to escape the derivative tag and makes this ambitious album a pleasure to listen to and to deconstruct.

Black Holes and Revalations

1. Take A Bow: Take A Bow is a very interesting song to open an album with... The instrumental sound reminds me as if you are falling into a Black Hole, Slowly, then a little faster, before you hit the bottom, a hard surface. A song that is like an alternative rock track that takes the lyrics out of the Heavy Metal Handbook, singing of the end of the world enforced by one person's mistake. Great concepts on instrumental and lyrical grounds, a great way to start an album. 8.5/10 "What We've Become Is contrary to what we want. Take a Bow" 2. Starlight Arguably the album's best song, beautiful lyrics, with instrumentals to help. One thing I particularly like about this song is the piano piece that goes largely unnoticed. This song is simply and unarguably great. 10/10 "Our Hopes and Expectations - Black Holes and Revalations" "Starlight, I will be chasing a Starlight, Until the End of my life, I don't know if its worth it anymore." 3. Supermassive Black Hole Muse's most famous song, but I've never understood why it's so loved... the catchy opening riff? The romantic lyrics? ("I thought I was a fool for no one, but I'm a fool for you"?) No, most likely to it's appearence on the soundtrack to "Twilight". -_- I think that All in all, it's a decent song, but nowhere near as great as people want to pretend. 7.5/10 4. Map Of the Problematique Epic, Absolutely Epic. I love the instrumentals, though I'm not sure as to what they are (Guitars, maybe?). I'd put it right up there with Starlight, a phenominal song that no one appretiates enough. Great lyrics, may I add 9.5/10 "And no one Thinks they are to blame. Why Can't we see, that when we bleed we bleed the same?" 5. Soldier's Poem A short sweet acoustic song. It's decent, but there isn't enough to it. Weakest song on the album. 6.5/10 6. Invincible I think that this is the best song on the album. A sweet, romantic power ballad, war drums included, not to mention an amazing guitar solo. (amazing, may I add, since it is an alternative song, not Hard Rock.) The Lyrics are arguably the best part of the song, but maybe I think that because they make me think of people who I know well. 10/10 " Follow through, Make your dreams come true, Don't give up the fight, You will be alright, 'Cause there's no one like you in the universe" "And Tonight, We Can Truely say, together we're invincible." 7. Assassin A heavier song than others, with a guitar riff pulled from a group like Rage Against the Machine, or Alice in Chains, or Metallica, that helps show their mastery over different fields of music. "War is overdue, The time has come for you, To shoot your leaders down, Join forces underground." 8. Exo-Poitics Very similar to Assassin, Harder rock than most of the other songs here, and lyrics ready to rebel against the world. 8/10 "As conspiracies unwind, Will you slam shut, Or free your mind, or stay hypnotised?" 9. City of Delusion It's almost like a classical piece, set with Violins and trumpet compostions that could've been conducted by John Williams! Good Guitar pieces as well. Once again, lyrics raging anger against an establishment. 9/10 "Destroy this City of Delusion! Break these walls down! I will avenge And justify my reasons With your blood!" 10. Hoodoo A very interesting and good song with great climax of Piano, Drums, and Orchestra, that accompany lyrics, all combining for a very eerie brew of a song. 9/10 "And I've had recurring Nightmares, that I was loved for who I am, missed the oppurtunity, to be... the better man." 11. Knights of Cydonia Another famous Muse song, but I find that this one isn't over-rated, unlike Supermassive Black Hole. (the fame comes from it's appearence in Guitar Hero) It Joins Invincible, Problematique, and Starlight in elite songs from this album. A philosophical verse, brought into Another rebellious chorus, followed by one of the most epic guitar riffs known to man. A song you won't soon forget. If you asked me to find one or a few songs to define Muse, their style and career, this would definetly be one of them. 10/10 "No ones gonna take me alive, the time has come to make things right, you and I must fight for out right, you and I must fight to survive." 12. Glorious A good song to end the Album with, it seems to give me a sensation of flying across the galay... 9/10 "It feeds the lies, and fuels the curse, and we too could be, Glorious" A fantastic album, every song is worth buying!!!

How Twilight Stole Christmas

Very good album, but I think it might be worthy to note that I hated the Twilight movie. If it hadn't been for the Twilight movie, I could actually tell people that I like Muse without being asked about Twilight. I think that if people actually took the time to listen to all of the songs on this album, they would stop buying the Twilight Soundtrack and the whole stupid fad would be over already. I enjoy every song

If all my songs were on CD's I'm sure they would have fallen apart by now. The first song I heard from them was New Born, it got me hooked, even my friend loves Muse after I introduced him to a few songs. We both even have had citations for noise violations because we play it to loud in our cars, right now my friends in the Military getting shot up in Afghanistan, and you can bet he's playing Hysteria while it all goes down. I even rebuilt my 76 Datsun 280z to their songs and when I finally got it running, I drifted in my car to Sunburn in an abandoned parking lot, music wasn't music until Muse came along.

Muse's fusion of progressive rock, glam, electronica, and Radiohead-influenced experimentation is crafted by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard. Bored by the sleepy life provided by their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon, the three British friends began playing music together. They started the first incarnation of their band while only 13 years old, changing the name of the group from Gothic Plague to Fixed Penalty to Rocket Baby Dolls as time...
