iTunes Review

This Scottish-bred singer-songwriter, who schooled in Connecticut where she was exposed to the Grateful Dead and 10,000 Maniacs, has enjoyed great success in Europe where her songs were immediately embraced by public and press alike, winning Best British Female Solo Artist at the Brits. Recorded just shy of her 30th birthday, Eye to the Telescope has the sound of experience working for itself as the slicker pop productions ("Other Side of the World," "Another Place to Fall") give way to the less adorned compositions that fill out the second half of this ambitious debut album. Tunstall's jazzy inflections give an extra sprint to "Under the Weather" and "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," which is how you might expect a jazz singer influenced by Billie Holiday to handle a Paul Simon composition. Rickie Lee Jones' streetwise attitude streaks through the uptempo tunes and the slinky slow-walk of "Universe & U," while Joni Mitchell's smoky, latter-day blues inform the quietest moments ("Silent Sea," "False Alarm"). Yet, while Tunstall's approach is schooled by these influences, she sounds like her own woman throughout.

Original, refreshing, and truly talented - a must listen!

Eye to the Telescope, debut album from Scotland native KT Tunstall and no doubt one of the best albums and Europe import of 2006. She is like the Norah Jones and Rachel Yamagata of US and Dido and James Blunt of UK. She's got that laid back acoustic cafe/lounge music and a touch a folk charm with a rich voice that surly gets your attention.

1. Other Side of the World - 6/5 title track and my most favorite on the album, what an awesome way to start off this album. A warm and pop rock beautiful melody tune that absorbs you entirely.

2. Another Place To Fall - 3/5 great hooks but this song did not capture me as much compared to the rest of the tracks.

3. Under the Weather - 4.5/5 don't ask why but it reminds me of "Singing in the Rain", an excellent movie theme classic. Her voice is rich and lyrics are easy to relate to "coz I'm under the weather, just like the world and I need somebody to hold.

4. Black Horse & the Cherry Tree - 5/5 This song was how I discovered KT, I saw her perform on Conan and the one woman band just blew me away. The most upbeat song off the album. This instant hit has a blues, folk rock with a splash of country feel. By the middle of the song you want to clap along.

5. Miniature Disasters - 4/5 a diverse track like a few others that is pop, folk, jazz wrapped in a box with a big red bow on top.

6. Silent Sea - 3.5/5 this song reminds me of Rachel Yamagata, an airy voice with a lonely acoustic guitar.

7. Universe & U - 3.5/5 this song is like a much less angry Fiona Apple's "Criminal." A groove-heavy rhythm that takes a few listens to get used but it has grown on me. Great lyrics too, "I can feel everything you do, hear everything you say, even when you're miles away, coz I am me, the universe and you..."

8. False Alarm - 4/5 melodic soft acoustic laid back track, good melodies. Sad lyrics "each time I turn around there's nothing there at all. So tell me why I feel like I'm up against a wall..."

9. Suddenly I See - 5/5 this was the song she performed on the Brit Awards 2006 it's got a very catchy, fast paced song with a poppy beat that'll make you get up and shake what your mama gave you.

10. Stoppin' the Love - 3.5/5 the beginning of the song is a bit heart pounding and the song is somewhat haunting especially with the backing vocals. This only thing this song is missing is the harmonica.

11. Heal Over - a great song that showcases her voice. This is a touching healing song "...sometimes life is hard, it's gonna take time but you'll just have to wait...let me wipe your tears away...coz you'll heal over someday." Thank goodness it's just her voice and her guitar, any other instruments will ruin it.

12. Through the Dark - Norah Jones like track, piano intro, bluesy, dreamy and mellow tune. A great closer song to the album that you can enjoy by a fireplace with a cup of cocoa in your hand.

It's truly refreshing to hear real talent on the radio and TV from someone who writes her own songs filled with meaning and purpose. She's not only talented, original and honest. If the track introductions above does not intrigue you to buy a versatile KT Tunstall debut CD, how about this, she is the winner of Q Music Awards 2005 for Best Track "Black Horse..." and Brit Awards 2006 for Best British Female Solo Artist. There will be more awards and much deserved recognitions to come, just wait and see.

No shoe scraping required

In a world abusing our ears until they bleed with 15-second bubble gum pop female artists, it’s refreshing to finally hear a true artist and songwriter. Don't sample, don't buy 1 or 2 radio hits (like black horse) just buy the album. You can thank me later. Truly inspiring and amazing music.

This album is amazing!

KT Tunstall is such a talented girl, you just need to watch and hear the live performance of Black Horse and The Cherry Tree to see what she's all about! Don't even doubt in buying this album, all the songs are amazing but if you're one of those people who only likes to download a few songs, please download these ones: Other Side Of The World, Another Place To Fall, Black Horse and The Cherry Tree, Suddenly I See (My favorite) and False Alarm.
