Crossing rap with country and riding hell-bent for the charts, Cowboy Troy turns Black In the Saddle into a hoedown and a throwdown. This charter member of Big & Rich’s Muzik Mafia and co-host of TV’s Nashville Star shows his determination to prove that his initial success was no fluke. His pungent “hick-hop” concoction deep-fries heavy-metal guitars, garnishes them with pedal-steel licks and serves them up with a rapid-fire rap attack reminiscent of vintage Run-D.M.C. Tracks like “Buffalo Stampede” and “Blackneck Boogie” work both as dance-floor jams and declarations of artistic freedom. In “How Can You Hate Me,” Troy takes on the stereotypes facing an African-American country artist with withering humor. While most of the album has an ornery edge, “Paranoid Like Me (“Tis the Season of Discontent)” takes a moodier tack as Troy ruminates over malice and mistrust. More typical is “Hick Chick,” a hard-crunching commentary on today’s honky-tonk angels. Troy plays it loud ‘n’ proud throughout, keeping his smile intact even as he muscles his way past racial profiles and redneck roadblocks. Rap on, Cowboy.

Honest review from someone who normally dislikes country...

As my nickname suggests I am a metal kind of guy. Never liked country, in fact, I hate it. However, after giving some albums and songs a try, I can't even say that my previous sentence is accurate anymore. "Buffalo Stampede" blew me away... I couldn't believe that you could rock hard and still be country. This album is inventive and fresh. It's easy on the ears of people who are not ready for the "down-home" country sound. If you want to move into country gradually, start with this album and go deeper from here. I'm impressed.

CBT ROCKS AGAIN!!!!!

This is one of the most inventive albums I have heard in years. CBT has taken it to a new level with this album. CBT has done a great job of infusing different types of music into one rocking smooth mix. Why this album isn't being blasted on every radio station country wide, I will never know. "How can you hate me" shows just how shallow some people in society and a select few country music fans can be. No one should be threatened for bringing a fresh and innovative sound to country music. Love your work CBT! To hell with the Haters and keep bringin the party sound!!!!!

Rapper Cowboy Troy exploded onto the country music scene in 2004 with a blend of country and rap he likes to call "hick-hop." It was his appearance on the Big & Rich track "Rollin' (The Ballad of Big & Rich)" that put him on CMT and into every honky tonk DJ's record collection that year, but Troy's involvement in country music and with Big & Rich began over a decade earlier. It was 1993 in his hometown of Dallas when Cowboy Troy — real name Troy Coleman — first met John Rich....
