fine wine

Don't throw these songs down once & make a ruling like some youngster who tastes fine wine for the first time & spits it out. Take 'em in. Pay close attention to what the artist is trying to share with you. Grow with the flavors. I'm diggin' it dudes.

Black Rock Rocks

The thing about Joe Bonamassa is that he has nothing to prove: he’s at the top of his game and can do what he likes. Fortunately for us, what Joe likes is a classy mix of blues and rock that makes old songs sound like you’re hearing them for the first time and new songs sound like you’ve been enjoying them all your life. That’s exactly what happens on Black Rock, Bonamassa’s tenth solo album. As always, it’s a complimentary mix of eclectic covers and original material recorded at Black Rock studios in Santorini. It’s a location that comes through loud and clear on this record, with echoes of local flavor provided by Greek musicians and writing inspired by the spectacular scenery (“Athens to Athens,” for example). This comes through most spectacularly on an astonishingly lovely version of Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on a Wire” with clarino and trembling strings that literally mimic birds on a wire. It’s a standout track, but not the only brilliant moment. The duet with his longtime mentor B.B. King on “Night Life” is filled with joyous energy, as is the last, uplifting and lighthearted track “Baby You Gotta Change Your Mind.” But it’s not just the familiar songs that make you want to play it again and again: it’s Bonamassa’s writing that I hear long afterwards in my mind; the evocative “Quarryman’s Lament,” an answer to the superb track on his last album is a wonderful link that carries his story forward. Joe’s well-known as a virtuoso guitar player, but he also has a voice every bit as good as his licks, and it’s been getting better all the time. It’s a voice you want to listen to, which is a vital ingredient when it comes to delivering the whole package. This is the real deal.

Really nice - but

I'd really like to hear Joe break out some guitar jams like he did with A New Day Yesterday. He doesn't seem to have those extended guitar jams
like the earlier days. I know he's "growing as an artist" but I need a couple songs I can crank up and make me go "WOW, THAT RIPPED!".
