iTunes Review

XTC can be a study in contrast. On Black Sea, it's a minimalist quartet with expansive productions, a modernist circa-1980 dance band with undanceable rhythms and its heart in '60s pop. And it's a group whose songs—with unflagging intelligence—question everyone and distrust signs of intellect. Its leader, Andy Partridge, is the virtual definition of the standoffish British observer, preferring socio-political metaphor over matters of the heart—and always singing on the defensive, as if he's the kid at the bottom of the pileup being beaten senseless. Black Sea is the group's fourth album, continuing along the sonic improvements and compositional maturity that took root with its previous release, Drums and Wires. "Respectable Street," "Generals and Majors," and "Towers of London" are the closest this group of misanthropes is likely to come to accessible, mainstream pop. "Living Through Another Cuba" and "Love at First Sight" virtually define the group's obstinate approach, spelling out its internal paranoia with jagged rhythms, carefully placed and seductively catchy backing vocals, and a parade of sounds that suggest the circus is in town.

Inspired me just as much as The Beatles did to write songs

The biggest compliment in my opinion to give any songwriter is that their songs are on the same standard or caliber as those of the Beatles. If Jeff Lynne is the "5th Beatle" then Andy Partridge must be the sixth. Not to mention that these guys are probably the best guitar players that have ever lived. No one could invent chords in their dreams that come close to this stuff. I am so happy that this album is on itunes. I have tried to find this album for years after I lost mine. If you don't have this album, get it. Its the beginning of XTC genius!

First Review!

Alright, my friend gave me three XTC albums, Black Sea, Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons. At first I didn't listen to this album but when I did I was surprised about what I was missing out on. Respectable Street and Sgt. Rock are my favorites, but they are all pretty good. For 7 dollars its definitely worth it so go ahead and buy it. (Mine was free!)

The beginning...

Black Sea was, and still does represent, the beginning of XTC as a seminal inspirational band. At this point, they're still flirting on the punk side of the street, with an aggressive rhythm section and quirky beats (well, they still HAD a drummer back then). Before this, the band was interesting, but that's all. Here they start to channel the surprising hooks into fully realized melodies with foot-tapping appeal, especially on tracks like "Living Through Another Cuba," "Generals and Majors" and the hyperactive "Burning with Optimism's Flames."

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Wiltshire, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding. While popular success has eluded them in both Britain...
