Album Review
On their first major-label release (after an EP and album for Fearless), the Maine take a step away from the emo-pop sound they began with. Instead of fast tempos, sunny songs about girls, and Auto-Tuned vocals, Black & White has a more mature and measured approach. The tempos are nearly all mid, the mood is often melancholy or nostalgic, and the overall feel is much more grown up. The presence of Hammond organ is a trademark signifier of a serious and adult band and it appears in a handful of songs here, layered in among the acoustic guitars. There’s no trace of punk left in their approach, in other words. In fact, if the vocals had more of a twang, the record could pass for a modern country release. It will certainly appeal to the same kind of fans who like Taylor Swift — people who like solid, catchy songs, sung earnestly. There are definitely quite a few songs that would sound good on the radio, like the hooky "Fuel to the Fire" and the cute "Right Girl."

Good but...
I've been a fan of The Maine since I can even remember. I've always enjoyed their catchy hooks along with their edgey lyrics that sometimes pushed the limits of being sexually explicit. I was really sad to hear that they decided to co-write more than half of these songs with another writer. I've always enjoyed their own lyrics and knowing they completely wrote them. To me it seems like a faster way to get music out which I'm not completely against. John's voice hasn't changed and I absolutely love the sound of his voice. I think this CD compliments The Maine well but I feel like the lyrics are still missing that "maine" touch. Either way, it's a catchy CD and is well performed. Good job, boys!
Such an amazing new sound!
I have to admit, that this album has a completely different sound than the previous! It's a more grown-up album, with less electronic, whiney notes. I'm in love with the singers more adult voice, he really flexes his vocal abilities in Black & White. I've been waiting months for this album to come out, and I'm not disappointed one bit!

a real review
A lot of people were expecting something different from the maine's new album, but their sound now has a little bit more of a country/rock sound to it. John O'Callaghan's voice has always been good, but he has pulled away from the whiney alternative sound and he really owns his voice now and knows what to do with it. The band mentioned that their inspiration for this album was Tom Petty and in a lot of the songs they portrayed him well, especially in Fuel to the Fire. They don't really have that young alternative sound that they did in their previous albums, this album is more mature and chill probably because they are getting older trying to appeal to a larger crowd. I personally think that they did a good job and instead of comparing Black & White to Can't Stop Won't Stop, I am going to treat them as two seperate albums that were created by an extremely talented band. So if you were disappointed by this, I would allow yourself to warm up to it and give it another chance because this is an amazing album even if it wasn't what you expected.
