Album Review

After the demise of Creed, Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips, and Brian Marshall obviously had unfinished business and hired singer/songwriter Myles Kennedy, who quickly formed a writing partnership with Tremonti, and the new band Alter Bridge brought out their debut album One Day Remains in 2004. Three years later in October 2007, the second album, Blackbird, was released and with new man Kennedy fully integrated into the lineup, Creed fans weren't disappointed although the overall sound had changed and had become both heavier and more mature without the bickering of Scott Stapp hindering the band's music. Right from track one, "Ties That Bind," there was an aggressive vocal and thundering guitar riff that hardly relented throughout the entire album. Tremonti was freed to play lead guitar as Eddie Van Halen would have done, which is shown to good effect on the track "Come to Life," but the overall heavy thunder effect of the guitar throughout denied him more chances to show off this skill. There were the more mellow tracks, however, "Brand New Start," "Buried Alive," "Watch Over You," and "Wayward One" all begin as acoustic songs and show the softer side of Alter Bridge. It was on the title track with eight minutes of powerful emotions at work that the band really shone, the song alternating between a hard rock guitar riff-heavy number and an acoustic ballad about the loss of a loved one.

THIS.... is rock music.

It's time to remove the "C" word from all discussions of Alter Bridge (Creed, for anyone who's not familiar with their past). This band consists of four guys, three of whom have seen one pinnacle of their career, and seem destined for a second one. They now have two solid albums of pure rock. It's cruncy rock, but very viable for those who don't tend to lean toward the harder side. They keep the passionate, soaring sound to the music, but they do it without being sappy. These are heavy but melodic tunes. There is no hip-hop/rock fusion here. There are no slow songs with violins in the background. Despite the fact that these are meaningful songs that were written with heart, there are no corny power ballads. Isn't that what rock music is supposed to be?! Guys that actually create their own music and play it well. And play it well they do. No one questions Mark Tremonti's credentials in the guitar world, and he more than lives up to that here. The tracks seem almost layered with thick guitar riffs, all scattered here and there, almost like salt for the music. They never interrupt, but there are definite moments in the song where you get used to hearing his input, usually in the form of a quick run down the fret board, and maybe a wammy bar thrown in for good measure. Myles Kennedy is one of the most underrated front men in rock music. The guy's got a flawless rock voice, hitting any note he decides to summon. His writing is definitely felt this time around, and he brings a passion to his music without thinking arrogantly thinking that he's some sort of rock "saviour". (I know, that was kind of a cheap shot at the past!) Brian Marshall brings a solid foundation with his bass playing. It's always clean, and maybe goes unnoticed by many listeners, but he provides a lot of what they are loving. That low end that you really feel more than hear comes compliments of an excellent bass guitarist. And finally, Scott Phillips. Here's a guy that I never knew could play like this. In the past, he's never had the proper freedom to let loose. His work on the first Alter Bridge album was a real eye-opener for me. Quick rhythms, great syncopations, and great work with that kick pedal. I absolutely love listening to him. Along with Marshall, he creates a powerful and precise rock rhythm section. Okay, so I cheated my own rule a little and mentioned a little bit of their past. It was only to establish that this is a different band, making different music, that deserves to stand alone and be judged. If I'm doing the judging, they are one of the most underrated rock bands out there.... but I have a feeling with the release of this album, that's all about to change.

My 2nd favorite album of the year

Ok as i'm sure you all heard, about a week before this album came out it leaked. and i have to admit i downloaded it. but i still went out and got my copy at Best Buy (and got 2 best buy exclusive tracks which are not listed here but i highly recommened them and will review them). There's something about this CD, like it jsut such a presence about it. :) Anyway to the review: Ties That Bind: Honestly this is their best album opener yet. i loved this song right and it gets your blood pumping like nothing else 10/10 Come To Life: Fricking great song, I hope that this becomes a single, I can't get enough of the solo on this track either. 10/10 Brand New Start: Havign only heard the "Live at Foxwoods Acoustic" version on youtube i didn't know what to expect from this song in terms of sound. great bluesy-rock song. Myles has a great solo 9/10 Buried Alive: Love the opening to song, great lyrics, greta guitar work, but the solo after the second chorus seems forced and too overproduced, and i dont like how myles' voice echoes at points. I love the ending solo though 9/10 Coming Home: I'm ambivalent on the opening, i think it drags on a bit before getting into the heaviness, i'm sure i'll like it live though. This song really grew on me, i wasnt really a fan of it at first 8.5/10 Before tomorrow Comes: When the album leaked this became my most played song on my ipod, and it will be back there again. this is probably my favorite song on the album strongly reccommended 10/10 Rise Today: First Single. It grew on me, still kinda have mixed feelings on it though IT just seems weak to me for some reason nd doesnt seem to fit into the album, at least where it was put in the track listing I honestly can;t justify anything below a 6 or 7 for it though 7/10 Blackbird: Epic, love bothe Myles' and MArk's solo's love the lyrics. Mark's solo made my jaw drop when i first heard the shredding he does. My favorite song other than before tomorrow comes 11/10 One By One: Great Song! A nice rockin heavy hitter after the semi-low key Blackbird. 10/10 Watch Over you: I'm a sucker for slow songs. Something about this feels generic though, still solid though. I would've liked a MArk tremonti guitar solo to somewhere in here. I cant justify anything less than a 9 though 9/10 Break me down: Love the opening riffs, this song has really grown on me, i actually liked it about as much as rise today at first, the lyrics are better than you would think from the name of the title. 8/10 White Knuckles: Another one of my favorites, a great heavy hitting song 10/10 Wayward one: Very good song all around. 9/10 *Best Buy Exclusive Bonus Tracks* The Damage Done: Very intersrign song and concept 9/10 New Way to Live: Find this song if you can it is a very cool song probably my favorite of the two bonus tracks. 10/10 So, i would give the album 4 satrs due the the weakness of Rise today, the opening of Coming home and the topic for break me down. Still a solid album. Pick up the best buy version if you can. I gave the bonus track Itunes offers a listen, and The damage done and New Way to live are way better. By the way, my favorite album of the year so far is Chimaira "Resurrection".

one of the best

simply amazing, what else is there to be said. As good as the single was, it was probably one of the worst songs on the album. Not taking anything away from the single, the rest of the album is just THAT good! Highlights are Coming Home, One By One, and of course Blackbird itself.

Biography

Formed: January, 2004 in Orlando, FL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Alter Bridge resurrected the music-making portion of Creed. After that band's 2004 dissolution, guitarist Mark Tremonti and drummer Scott Phillips tapped ousted bassist Brian Marshall for the new project. Ex-Mayfield Four frontman Myles Kennedy was soon on board as well, and Alter Bridge made their Wind-Up debut in August 2004 with One Day Remains. Written largely by Tremonti, the record tried to lean more toward a hard rock/metal sound than the post-grunge grandstanding of his previous group. After...
