Iris seperates from the crowd

I like synth-pop...always have...but my one complaint about the genre was that the vocalists too often sound like 15-year old European opera singers, with high warbly voices that, for me, ruin the impact of the music. So I searched for, and found my answer to that in industrial music, but then my complaint about that genre was that there's only so much gutteral singing/croaking that I can stand for the most part. In short, my ideal in music is good electronic instrumentation with clear, honest vocals (singing good lyrics) and for me, that is what Iris delivers...even more so with Blacklight, which has that synthpop feel with some of the darkness and aggression of industrial mixed in.

Iris' earlier works are good, and Wrath was a good indicator of where they were going, but it's clear on Blacklight that they have matured and have it all together. The music is tight, melodic, and very well produced and mixed, and the vocals feature well in the mix too, most especially because Reagan Jones can SING. It's noteworthy too that rather than following the trend of making everything sound "retro" which is very popular these days, they have made an album with more modern sounds, textures, and beats. There is some guitar on these tracks too, but it's used sparingly, or with enough effects to make it fit well into their sound.

I won't go into a track by track review, but there wasn't anything disappointing on this album. The lyrics are strong, maybe even a tad on the spiritual side sometimes, and keep the listener engaged, and there's enough variety in the tracks to keep the album from being monotonous.

So, if you like synth-pop with some punch, well crafted songs, etc, check out Blacklight. Great album.

Disapppointing at Best

Imagine sitting in a Rock Music Lounge and sitting down amongst other Patrons you begin overhear a conversation from the table next to you while the gritty, abrasive music (or noise -- you can't make out the melody) is rudely blaring through the speakers. This is "Blacklight." I was somewhat dismayed at Wrath, but being a Loyal Fan, I immediately bought Blacklight without any pre-listening first -- wish I did. All the songs sound exactly the same. I feel almost as if they wrote, prepared, recorded, and distributed the Album in 1 day. It's like Iris was told "hey -- we need something right now -- just put something together and throw some epic and climactic synthesizer sequences and we'll be good to go." Come on, Iris. Seriously? None of these songs impacted me emotionally, intellectually, nor summoned any image of ethereal bliss. Need to get "reconnect" with your older style -- it's obvious you have "disconnected" from the grassroots approach that made you successful. Too cliche for me...

Bummed

I love you guys but I'm really confused. IRIS used to be so original, and had a sound unlike ANYONE else. Your first 3 albums, and especially "Wrathe" were filled with songs that I could feel in my veins and in my heart. They were songs that spoke to me, touched my soul. Blacklight is just lacking so much. I HATE that I am giving this review but I just don't understand what happened. This album is dark, cold, and lacks the emotion IRIS always put into the music. I am really bummeed out. And what happened to Reagans vocals??? He has such a unique, and powerful voice. Just listen to "The Delivered One".

I will say that the album ends with a track that I think is good, Cruel Silence is the only song on here that makes me remember what IRIS were all about.

I will always be a HUGE fan, but I am hoping for a quick 5th release, and the return of the music that changed my life.

Biography

Formed: 1993

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Often described by critics as disposable, '80s synth pop acts such as Erasure and Depeche Mode continued to inspire young musicians to write hummable songs with a plethora of keyboards even into the '90s. Iris formed in 1993 as Forgiving Iris with Reagan Jones (vocals, keyboards) and Matt Morris (keyboards, programming). Jones and Morris met in college; they were taking an electronic music class and discovered they shared the same taste in artists. Forgiving Iris started performing at clubs in the...
