iTunes Review

This alt-country quartet’s seventh studio album and first in four years, 2008’s Blame it On Gravity, is the sound of a band fully recharged and ready for the road. Though two members live on opposite coasts and main songwriter Rhett Miller has been working up a solo career with two worthy solo albums, the originally Dallas-based Old 97’s integrate their interests in power pop’s energy and country music’s lonesome sweepings with a studio’s worthy polish and a live band’s perceptible energy. While tunes such as “The Fool,” “No Baby I” and “Early Morning“ kick back with the band’s recognizable cowpunk bounce, the album also contains several welcome surprises. “She Loves the Sunset” recalls the laid-back acoustic ambitions and earnest sentiments of Jonathan Richman. “This Beautiful Thing,” with its jangling midtempo and smooth harmonies, and the wistful “Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue,” both written by bassist Murry Hammond, add a welcome counterpoint to Miller’s jaunty excursions (“I Will Remain,” “The Easy Way”), maintaining the group’s unusual assured range.

Blame it on Being Great!!!!!

I love this album from start to finish. From the first cord of The Fool to the last drumbeat on The One this album rocks. The more you listen the more you will appreciate what is going on. Rhett's lyrics are good, but this time around there is a HUGE Ken presence. Ken's ability to hit the perfect note at the perfect time makes this album an Old 97's classic. The 2 Murry songs(This Beautiful Thing & Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue) are mesmerizing, with the later of the 2 almost haunting at times. Early Morning has Ken blasting all the way through it. One heck of a ride! My favorite, mainly because of the humbling story, is Here's to the Halcyon. This is one Awesome album, get it now! ~hitchhike2rhome

Just can't help jumping up and down

when you hear this album!!! This is one of those albums you enjoy more and more every time it is played. I LOVE every track!!! No fillers here!

Mighty Fine!

This one is really terrific. The album has a lot of variety, and it delivers what you need from the 97's. There's certainly new sound here, but it's familiar. There's an expansiveness here that I loved in 'Too Far to Care.' The guys have done a great job of providing what I love them for. Buy this one!

Although they became one of the most enduring bands in the alternative country-rock catalog, Old 97's drew inspiration from a broad range of genres, including the twangy stomp of cowpunk and the melodies of power pop. Formed in 1993 by frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond, the group spent the bulk of the decade posed on the brink of mainstream success, issuing albums that often drew warm reviews but never yielded a substantial hit. Old 97's tightened their sound as the decade drew to a...
