iTunes Review

The daughter of a deacon and a choir director, Chrisette Michelle possesses a voice bathed in the purity of gospel music, and with Epiphany she adapts her superlative vocals to a modern pop-R&B setting. Pop prodigy Ne-Yo wrote almost half of the album’s 13 songs, including the title track and “What You Do,” two singles that luxuriate in Michelle’s sincerity and the sweetness of the hooks. Nothing on Epiphany is too rushed or overblown, and Michelle doesn’t have to belt it out to capture the listener’s attention. She has a supple, versatile voice, and even in the melodramatic ballads and dance songs there are underpinnings of jazz phrasing. It’s not hard to see why Michelle has been a favorite collaborator of elder rappers like Nas, Ghostface Killah and Jay-Z. Those artists emphasize emotion and storytelling, and Michelle has maturity and depth of feeling that is hard to find among young singers. Epiphany forgoes the gimmicks of modern R&B, and shows that integrity, sincerity and practiced skill are not mutually exclusive to mainstream appeal.

Customer Reviews

good but not great

its more poppy , her first had soo much soul. She's catering to the mainstream now, she lost weight and changed her sound, still good but her soul music is better, buy I Am.

Disappointing

I am a die hard Chrisette fan and so far I am NOT feeling this CD. The songs are great and the production is impeccable! Clearly Ne-yo did HIS thing along with the others! HOWEVER, I feel that they changed her sound and her style too much. None of the songs seem to fit her vibe or her voice. Her vocals are not shining on here at all. She even sounds BAD on a couple tracks. I'm REALLY trying to love this CD, but I mean really I'm loving the production and the writing and wishing that somebody else was singing and that we the FANS could have the REAL CHRISETTE BACK! I remember seeing an interview with her and Ne-Yo and she was saying something about the record label trying to figure out how to make her more mainstream and more marketable and to me, they have destroyed her essence... Most of the CD sounds like Ne-Yo.... or sounds like Chrisette singing Ne-Yo overdubs... I am also a diehard Ne-Yo fan, but I don't want to hear Chrisette doing Ne-Yo... IMO the majority of the CD sounds liek Chrisette doing Ne-Yo karaoke! I'm so sorry Chrisette and fans... but Epiphany pales tremendously in comparison to I AM!

Super disappointed

I'm pissed... her last album was original and brilliant. This album sounds like she is trying to be too mainstream. I think Porcelain Doll is just about the only song that feels like it's really her.

Biography

Born: 1982

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '00s

In a very short span of time, R&B singer/songwriter Chrisette Michele shot from small-time performer up to one of Def Jam's most promising talents, purely based on her unique instrument — a gorgeous and effortlessly versatile singing voice colored with Billie Holiday-esque inflections of vocal pop and jazz. The jazz-influenced vocalist, born Chrisette Michele Payne in 1982, developed her pipes through singing gospel, first performing for a congregation at age four. God and music were clearly...
