iTunes Review

Mark Oliver Everett, who records under the moniker Eels, spent eight years writing and recording this 33-song, 94-minute double album, releasing several other notable albums in the interim. Blinking Lights, however, is a sprawling achievement that includes subtle instrumentals, quiet brooding ballads, and even a few, jarring dance moves. (For example, “Going Fetal” features a yelping Tom Waits and a rhythm track designed to throw out your back.) Lyrically, it delves deeply into Everett’s psyche, issuing thoughts on the love-hate relationship with his father, his mother’s death to cancer, his sister’s suicide, and his own hopes for the future, which mostly come courtesy of his wife. A glass-half-empty guy most of his life, Everett sounds like a genuine optimist during “Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living)” and offers a soothing apology for “I’m Going to Stop Pretending That I Didn’t Break Your Heart.” Throughout, his music is crisply orchestrated, with mellotrons and both electric and acoustic guitars supporting his parched vocal delivery. Blinking Lights often sounds like a man whispering from the basement, not wishing to wake the family or to draw too much attention to ideas he fears others may not find so appealing. Luckily for us, he’s chosen to share those fears, which are compellingly captured and delivered.

A Triumph!

I am a huge eels fan and was looking forward to this album tremendously. E did not disappoint! This has become one of my favorite, if not my favorite eels album, and one of my all-time favorites. This is truely an album that must be enjoyed completely, from the first song on disc one to the last on disc two. However, if you are going to just choose a few to own I recommend trouble with dreams, railroad man, sweet li'l thing, If you see Natalie, ugly love, the stars shine in the sky tonight, and things the grandchildren should know. I know that may seem like a lot but this album is full of incredible songs and it was hard to pick those as favorites. Although this album was recorded over several years it sounds very cohesive and their is a definite mood set by the album. Listening to this album on full volume on your iPod is an incredible experience. Blinking Lights is in every respect an incredible album and one I recommend to all.

Brilliant

heartbreakingly sad, but nevertheless an original masterpiece

outstanding. pure, raw, emotion.

This album is the first album I have heard in a long time that almost made me cry. I like how E stayed away from creating a pop sounding album while also creating a sweet storyline that everyone can relate to. This album, if you haven't heard it or haven't figured it out yet, is about the little things in life that we all need to stop and enjoy. The first part is about all the bad things that have happened in his life. (Listen close, you will understand) then the second part is about his "renewed" life and how he realizes that life is about the moment you are living and not the moments you did or will experience. Within the album there are at least one or two instrumental pieces that let you stop and think about what you have already heard that still, however, have meaning. I am pretty sure that this is a biography of E's life. Definitely an album to listen to straight through though, if you are one of those that tends to jump around. If you must, the two songs to download if you only want singles, are "Hey Man (Now You're Really Living) and "I'm going to stop pretending that I didn't break your heart" Also, Mother Mary, Last Time We Spoke, Losing streak, and TROUBLE WITH DREAMS. If you can, buy the whole album. It isn't much for background music but if you want something smart and deep that you can listen to and get something new out of each time you hear it, BUY IT NOW

Although Eels are often marketed as a full-fledged band, singer/songwriter E (real name: Mark Oliver Everett) is responsible for the group's sound and direction. Born in Virginia on April 9, 1963, Everett became interested in rock music at an early age via his sister's record collection, and began playing drums at the age of six (as well as tinkering on his family's piano). As the years progressed, Everett began leading a troubled teenage life, which was further complicated by his father's death....
