Album Review

Blizzard Beasts, Immortal's fourth album, should be chalked up as a transitional album in the band's mighty career, being the last to feature guitarist and founding member Demonaz (he quit after a bout with tendonitis); bassist/vocalist Abbath would take over six-string and songwriting duties, ultimately leading the band out of blastbeat hell and across more broad-scoped, epic terrain. Still, the record is brilliant when compared to similar Norwegian black metal acts mired in ludicrous "necro" aesthetics. "Nebular Ravens Winter," "Suns That Sank Below," and "Frostdemonstorm" offer a few decent riffs and solid arrangements, and six-minute epic "Mountains of Might" leans toward the black metal-by-way-of-German-thrash genius of subsequent albums.

Wintry Altars of Madness

This album is very different than the doomy, German-thrash-sounding Immortal of today. Back when Demonaz played guitar for them, they tried to become more and more extreme with each album, and with this, they hit a wall. They pretty much set the high-water mark for extremity here. It's 80s Morbid Angel on fast-forward, from what I can tell. Demonaz apparently tremelo-picked himself into tendonitis with this album. Overall, it's a very interesting listen, essentially being ye olde deathrash being ripped to shreds by rabid Norwegian hellhounds.

Album of the Ages

This album is second only to At the Heart of Winter. Blizzard Beast is filled with raw speed. Battlefields and Nebular Ravens Winter are the ultra aggressive tracks on this album that are my favorites. Montains of Might is the track that stands out for me. The slow intro pulled me in and I've been hooked every since.

Immortal's best album ever

Raw, epic, amazing, dark, just a few words to describe this album. Immortal an amazing black metal band from Norway. Starting back in 1990 with Jørn Inge Tunsberg, Demonaz, and Armagedda. This album was the last album to feature Demonaz. Abbath started making music and "At The Heart Of Winter" what an album. This album is more of a transition from their darker black metal music leaving behind the heavier music. Getting farther into the realm of Symphonic Black metal and leaving death metal to die with Old Funeral. This album is a must have if you like Symphonic Power Metal or Black Metal. Mountains Of Might - 5/5 - The best track on the album, probably Immortal's best song ever! The beginning, the synths are amazing at the beginning. Later in the song they make another appearance also, Abbath's vocals are amazing on this track screaming out "Icy peaks as far as the eye can sing" along with a nice clean guitar. Then shouting out "No one's ever there" followed by a nice riff. Get this track and nebular Ravens Winter if you can't afford the whole album amazing songs!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Of all the Norwegian black metal bands, Immortal has, arguably, stuck the closest to the mystical, occult-inspired vision of the scene: the bandmembers kept the evil-Kiss makeup throughout the band's existence, rarely experimented outside of the traditional guitars-drums-bass instrumental configuration, and never revealed their real names. Brothers in pseudonyms only, vocalist/bassist Abbath Doom Occulta and guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta formed Immortal in Bergen, Norway, in 1990. Abbath was originally...
