iTunes Review

Bon Iver (a.k.a. Justin Vernon) made a big, unexpected splash in 2008 with From Emma, Forever Ago, a gorgeous backwoods acoustic gem with real emotional power. The first three songs on Blood Bank would have fit on From Emma, which is a compliment, yet this is much more than a brief set of outtakes (in fact, they were recorded at a different time). There are certainly similarities to his debut, but only in that it features many of the same elements that made the first release so impressive — moving melodies, gentle guitar, and that stunning, and usually multi-tracked, falsetto. “Woods” is the odd man out here, and it’s a risk that works. On it, he uses a digital effect on his voice and then proceeds to add layer after layer of synthesized vocal harmonies until it builds into something cinematic and strangely beautiful. It may not become everyone’s favorite cut, but it’s a worthy and refreshing experiment that’s different from anything else he’s done thus far. Blood Bank fully stands on its own merits, and it’s to his credit that it sounds like a distinct piece of work rather than extension of another one.

bon iver does it again...

another great release by bon iver. what's not to love? 1) blood bank = 5/5 i can see why this is the title track. lyrics that give you chills sung quietly over a clean electric guitar. music at its finest. 2) beach baby = 4/5 short but sweet. the ambient lap steel really brings out the song's character. 3) babys = 5/5 swells of piano with harmonies to match. amazing. 4) woods = 5/5 i give this one a perfect rating because it is completely unexpected, yet so beautiful.

Unexpected

I honestly think "Woods" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard. He took a tool (autotune) that has been bastardized by contemporary rap artists, and used it for something amazing. So, when first listening, try to be open minded. Hear it all the way through, as it builds and climaxes. Overall, a great EP.

best song of the year

I know it's early in the year, but I find it hard to believe anyone will be able to top 'woods'

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips. Vernon moved back to Wisconsin the winter following...
