iTunes Review

London-based, Iranian born DJ and musician Leila has straddled two divergent musical paths: her creations are often spooky, dark, and gritty — a decidedly more somber version of Mancunian DJ Mr. Scruff — but they’re also reminiscent of Ellen Allien’s quirky, collage-inspired noodlings. There are a number of cameos here by artists including Martina Topley Bird (Tricky), Terry Hall (The Specials, Fun Boy Three), Andy Cox (The English Beat, Fine Young Cannibals), and even Leila’s own sister, Roya Arab. “Mettle” is gloriously trippy and dense with swirling synths, distorted, rumbling bass and distant deep percussion, while “The Exotics” is sheer cocktail nation bliss, with Seaming To’s vocals (she of various Ninja Tunes recordings) evoking a kinder, gentler, Diamanda Galas or Yma Sumac. “Time to Blow” has an eerie, Tim Burton-esque cinematic feel, and M.I.A. comes to mind in the forcefully delirious “Deflect.” The playful side of this masterful artist is represented by tracks like  “Norwegian Wood,” a hazy goof on the Beatles’ classic, and the delightful “Little Acorns,” a carefree romp with a hopscotch beat and the sounds of toy-like horns and kids’ humming and singing.

Listeners must Listen

Since when did being able to "understand what they are saying" become the standard for rating music? (Yeah, I'm talking to that crazy guy who gave BL&B one star...). Anyway, some listeners must remember that to appreciate music, you actually have to LISTEN to it. What you'll find when you DO listen, or at least what I found, was a remarkably rich and textured line up of songs that iTunes' 30-second snippets don't do just to. While I'm no die-hard Leila fan, this LP does deserve a fair listen and in the very least it's much better than some of the weird and painful electronic stuff iTunes periodically throws under the "indies" section.

First Quality Review

I'm thinking the negative reviewer can't handle his "alternative", but no matter. This album, admittadly based on only listening to the samples, seems like something Danny Elfman might like. It is dark, moody, but a bit fun. The sound is toned way down, the vocals strange and trippy. It will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea, as the previous reviewer so eloquently proved, but for the right person, at the right time, this album will be great.

Love it hate it

These songs make me think of happy people in straight jackets that are fascinating to talk to. It's sweet little melodys that can eventually drive you crazy and I can't figure out exactly why I like it! I think that was the point of Leila, well done.

Moving from a supporting keyboard role with Björk and Galliano to put out her own album on Aphex Twin's Rephlex Records, Leila is the rare female electronica songwriter who doesn't sing, choosing instead to use vocals from friends — and even her own sister — for her Like Weather long-player. Born in Iran, she spent part of her childhood there but was forced to flee to London with her family. She became interested in DJing as well as keyboards, and left college to play with Björk on her...
