Album Review

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' best album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik benefits immensely from Rick Rubin's production — John Frusciante's guitar is less overpoweringly noisy, leaving room for differing textures and clearer lines, while the band overall is more focused and less indulgent, even if some of the grooves drag on too long. Lyrically, Anthony Kiedis is as preoccupied with sex as ever, whether invoking it as his muse, begging for it, or boasting in great detail about his prowess, best showcased on the infectiously funky singles "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss." However, he tempers his testosterone with a more sensitive side, writing about the emotional side of failed relationships ("Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied"), his drug addictions ("Under the Bridge" and an elegy for Hillel Slovak, "My Lovely Man"), and some hippie-ish calls for a peaceful utopia. Three of those last four songs (excluding "My Lovely Man") mark the band's first consistent embrace of lilting acoustic balladry, and while it's not what Kiedis does best as a vocalist, these are some of the album's finest moments, varying and expanding the group's musical and emotional range. Frusciante departed after the supporting tour, leaving Blood Sugar Sex Magik as probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make.

I only needed to buy the studio version of Castles Made of Sand and it was awsome. But all the songs in the BloodSugarSexMagik times were awsome. They Shoulda added all the b-sides and the music video for Breking the Girl though.

Chili Peppers Strike at the Right Time!

In my mind this one is tied with Californication. There is NO FILLER. NO GARBAGE. RHCP gets even heavier sounding, yet they still maintain that rich funk style and rap/rock lyrics. Unlike past Peppers albums, it seems Frusciante's (sorry if I spelled it wrong!) ripping guitar was featured much more than on Mother's Milk or any other RHCP album to come with songs like "I Could Have Lied", "Under the Bridge" and other songs across the album. The band's most influential album ever by far with superior recording and producing. The chemistry within the band and crew really improved since Mother's Milk. As far as the 'Bonus Track Version"...it may be worth it if you want the music video of "Give It Away", "Little Miss Lover" which sounds to me like another cover of Jimi Hendrix-and I don't know who wrote "Castles of Sand"-(although it did appear on an earlier RHCP album). A milestone and turning point for the band as they now have been thrust into MTV and such. A *MUST HAVE* for any real rock listener!

Love this Album. some of the chili peppers best work.

I love this album. I don't really have any bad words for it. Flea and Frusciante's Funky bass and guitar, Anthony's Vocals full of energy and passion, and Chad's Hard hitting Drums all Mix together to Create One of the Greatest albums I have ever heard. and that is saying a lot because of not only All of the other great Chili peppers Work but all the great rock n roll out there. 5 out of 5 for sure.

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake,...
