Album Review

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' best album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik benefits immensely from Rick Rubin's production — John Frusciante's guitar is less overpoweringly noisy, leaving room for differing textures and clearer lines, while the band overall is more focused and less indulgent, even if some of the grooves drag on too long. Lyrically, Anthony Kiedis is as preoccupied with sex as ever, whether invoking it as his muse, begging for it, or boasting in great detail about his prowess, best showcased on the infectiously funky singles "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss." However, he tempers his testosterone with a more sensitive side, writing about the emotional side of failed relationships ("Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied"), his drug addictions ("Under the Bridge" and an elegy for Hillel Slovak, "My Lovely Man"), and some hippie-ish calls for a peaceful utopia. Three of those last four songs (excluding "My Lovely Man") mark the band's first consistent embrace of lilting acoustic balladry, and while it's not what Kiedis does best as a vocalist, these are some of the album's finest moments, varying and expanding the group's musical and emotional range. Frusciante departed after the supporting tour, leaving Blood Sugar Sex Magik as probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make.

BEST ALBUM OF OUR TIME

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is one of the best albums of the nineties. All of the songs are pure gold and they combine to form one coherent album that is pure Magik. As a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, I love all of these songs, but I will say that even a casual listener will enjoy the music that definitively forged the early nineties into the golden era of music. Such monumental albums such as Nevermind, Dookie, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Rage Against The Machine are released. THE POWER OF EQUALITY - One of my favorite tracks on the album, it combines a hauntingly gaunt introduction into a full-fledged sea of funk. The bass roars in and pulses the song with addictive fills and interludes. Very politically minded outspoken. [10/10] IF YOU HAVE TO ASK - A live track, it perfectly demonstrated how the Red Hot Chili Peppers can combine mastery of their music with a crowd-pleasingly carefree party attitude. John's vocals on the chorus are not to be missed. [9/10] BREAKING THE GIRL - A touching song that is outlined by a brilliant percussive interlude and beautifully sparse acoustic guitars. [8/10] FUNKY MONKS - Songwriting at its absolute best, this song represents the very spirit of the album and of the band. Awesome pop guitar riff, the ringing vocals provide for very cool flange effects. [10/10] SUCK MY KISS - A raunchy song that hit the airwaves with a bang. The song is brilliant, and keeps you raptured from beginning to end. "I am/ What I am/ And those motherf*ckers don't give a damn" [10/10] The first five tracks keep you lusting for more. Please buy this amazing album to support iTunes decision to add more of their music. iTunes and Steve Jobs, please add the entire catalogue of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It contains such albums as The Uplife Mofo Party Plan, Freaky Styley, Mothers Milk, Californication, By The Way, and all the other amazing work. BUY THIS ALBUM!

Flawless!

BSSM is possibly one of the greatest albums released in history! It's stong, catchy, and very funky from top to bottom. It is an overall masterpiece, all killer and no filler. But how the heck do they get off classifying this as pop? I mean, sure, Under the Bridge was a huge pop hit, but what about the other stuff? I mean, don't the words "alternative" or "funk" come to mind? But it's still an amazing album. I'd recommend it to ANYONE!!!

MORE RHCP

This is truly the best RHCP album. Flea's bass in this album is freakin' godly and Anthony Kiedis's lyrics are at their best. PLEASE PUT ON MORE ALBUMS!

Biography

Formed: 1983 in Hollywood, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak,...
