Album Review

Boy, whoever thought that technical metal was dead as a doornail during the mid- to late '90s has been proven dead wrong. Just a few years after this aforementioned era of "metal no man's land," technical metal has spread like a virus, via bands that share both an appreciation of the extreme aggression of Slayer and the technical proficiency of Iron Maiden. A fitting example of both of these metallic styles colliding as one is Finland's Children of Bodom, and especially their 2008 offering, Blooddrunk. All the ingredients from past Bodom releases are present once more — Goth keyboards, guitar acrobatics, and vocals that sound straight out of the torture chamber. These lads sure can play their instruments, as evidenced by such intense metal blasts as the title track, "Smile Pretty for the Devil," and "Tie My Rope." But one thing that differentiates Children of Bodom from the host of other similarly styled bands is that they know the importance of succinct songwriting — only one track here stretches past the five-minute mark. As a result, Blooddrunk showcases one of the few modern-day metal bands that manage to balance straight-to-the-point songwriting with their collective instrumental prowess.

Disappointing.

I have been a COB fan for many years now. And while I can appreciate them trying to do something different, in the style of a more progressive sound, I think they lose their overall sound on this release. Maybe what I'm trying to say here is that it's a decent metal album, but is a less than decent COB album. For the majority of the songs, all sense of their 'melodic death metal' appeal seems to be lost. They don't sound like themselves anymore. You can hear the progressive influences, but it makes them sound average; nothing special in my opinon. The highlights are found in the title track, as well as Hellhounds on My Trail; Tie My Rope is also decent, but unfortunately this new re-recorded version is nothing compared to the original (ironic, since the band wasn't happy with it at first). Track down the older version on the Viva La Bands 2 compilation. Hopefully Bodom will learn from this slump of an album, and try and get in touch with their roots a little more.

cob had done it again!!

this cd keeps growing on me more and more, i love the thrashy feel, and not to mention the sickkk solos, this just screams headbanging. i loved aydy, dont know why others didnt, but this in my opinion is still better. quick review 1) Hellhounds on my Trail - 10/10 love this song...my def fav right now, im a fan of their melodic licks, and about 1 min thru the song the cob i know breaks out xD and probably one of the sweetest sounding solos ive ever heard. def must have. 2) Blooddrunk - 9/10 love the riffs, could be a bit more melodic but still an awesome single, one of the best on the album 3) Lobodomy - 7/10 of all the songs on the album this is my least favorite, dont know why but just didnt do it for me, although im sure ill grow into it 4) One day you will cry - 8/10 a softer song than most, but breaks into sick melodies and hardcore rockage! pulled off very well 5) Smile Pretty for the Devil - 10/10 love this track...its sick in every single way, i love the lamb of god-ish type riffs that break in, similar to tie my rope, awesome song, a definite must have 6) Tie my rope - 10/10 my favorite song on the album, first i ever heard and i still love it, although i liked the demo better, this new version is cool in dif ways aswell 7) Done with everything Die for Nothing - 9/10 i love the chorus so much! the song itself is so well put together, it just flows so smooth in such an odd way 8) Banned from Heaven - 8/10 slower song, but it gets better as it goes, still same cob feel 2 it so u gotta love it 9) Roadkill morning - 10/10 heaviest song on the album in my opinion, and def up there, thrashy riffs that just scream for you to rock out. love it, def. must have

A Mix of HCD and AYDY

Like most other COB fans that have been with them a while, I was dissapointed in AYDY. It was ok, but not of the caliber that I wanted from COB. Fortunately, this trend seems to have reversed in Blooddrunk. Sounding a bit like HCD and AYDY, while it is not the best COB Cd (Or even close), it's definitly worth $8.99. Buy it, and even if its not your favorite, it's still COB.
