Album Review

Superunknown was a breakthrough in many ways. Not only did the album bring Soundgarden a new audience, it dramatically expanded their vision, as well as their accomplishments. If Down on the Upside initially seems a retreat from the grand, layered textures of Superunknown, let it sink in. The sound of Down on the Upside is certainly more immediate, but the band hasn't returned to the monstrous, unfocused wailing of Louder Than Love. Instead, they've retained their ambitious song structures, neo-psychedelic guitar textures, and winding melodies but haven't dressed them up with detailed production. Consequently, Down on the Upside is visceral as well as cerebral — "Rhinosaur" goes for the gut, while "Pretty Noose" is updated, muscular prog rock. Down on the Upside is a deceptive album — it might seem like nothing more than heavy metal, but a closer listen reveals that Soundgarden haven't tempered their ambitions at all.

I bought the LP when I heard they broke up the same year this was released. "Ty Cobb" is my favorite, but I played "Never the Machine Forever" before leaving for work.

Sequencing Problems

This is a great Soundgarden album. Something about it always bugged me though and recently I think I figured it out. It is a few songs too long and the sequence is wrong. I would streamline it and pump up the energy by removing Zero Chance, Dusty, and Applebite completely. Pretty Noose is a good opener and Boot Camp is an awesome closer. I would bunch together the hardest songs like Ty Cobb, Never The Machine Forever, No Attention and An Unkind. Blow Up The Outside World would be a good bridge between the harder songs and the slower ones toward the end like Tighter & Tighter. I think you could even argue for removing Switch Opens and Overfloater if you are really trying streamline the album and make time fly. So it would be: Pretty Noose, Rhinosaur, Burden In My Hand, Never Named, No Attention, An Unkind, Ty Cobb, Never The Machine Forever, Blow Up The Outside World, [Overfloater, Switch Opens], Tighter & Tighter, Boot Camp. That track listing would make for arguably the best album in the Soundgarden catalog in my opinion.

Which is Soundgarden's Second Best?

Badmotorfinger or Down on the Upside? They are too close to call so I'll let you decide. Click Yes for Badmotorfinger, No for Down on the Upside. They are both 8/10 but in aspects where one album shines, the other is flawed. Read before deciding.

Better opening track- Rusty Cage is good, but Pretty Noose is way better.

Better closing track- New Damage vs. Boot Camp, They're about even.

Overall better songs- Pretty Noose and Burden in My Hand are better than anything off Badmotorfinger; Down on the Upside also has Rhinosaur, Ty Cobb, Blow up the Outside World, and Never the Machine Forever.

Overall weaker songs- Down on the Upside has songs that could have been omitted; Badmotorfinger doesn't.

Consistency- Badmotorfinger easily wins this category, there isn't a weak song on that album. Down on the Upside has a few weak songs, which makes it too long as well as inconsistent.

Creativity/Versatility- The songs all sound the same on Badmotorfinger. Down on the Upside easily wins this category.

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Soundgarden made a place for heavy metal in alternative rock. Their fellow Seattle rockers Green River may have spearheaded the grunge sound, but they relied on noise rock in the vein of the Stooges. Similarly, Jane's Addiction were too fascinated with prog rock and performance art to appeal to a wide...
