Album Review

Diva outlaw Jessie James first caught a flash of attention with the hoedown-meets-crunk-jam "Blue Jeans." The call-and-response ode to the apparel's curves featured prominently in the 2009 summer movie Confessions of a Shopaholic, and its offbeat sensual drive and girl-power themes stirred a minor buzz. Her self-titled debut, released later that same year and featuring said track, continues to frolic in the gulf between sultry-sweet pop strut and country-girl coyness. However, while James is not averse to basking in a classic Nashville theme, as on "My Cowboy" or the Katy Perry co-penned "Bullet," or throw in a sizzling banjo, she is at heart a pop singer. Tracks like the opening single "Wanted" and "Girl Next Door," bask in gigantic hooks as James hurls her soul into the simple, seductive rockers.

A strong, 9-track release. . . only....

... only, there are 12 tracks on the album. James is poorly served by the final three cuts, which are so unoriginal and uninspiring that they do a disservice to the other songs on the album, which are quite strong, straightforward modern pop (with only the tiniest touch of country sprinkled in). Unfortunately, most of the songs' lyrics are interchangeable paeans along the lines of "nobody else does it better than I do." And while there's nothing wrong with that approach, per se, James definitely seems capable of thinking above the waist. Besides, with so much focus on sex, she can't help repeating stale bedroom cliches -- "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" -- that don't get any fresher, no matter how inventively they're delivered. All in all, a danceable, powerful pop debut that could have been even better.

Wantit!!

This album shows her potential as a star, but overshadows her amazing voice, with these pathetic songs. She needs to be signed on with a new record label, who can GIVE her songs, that will show her full potential in her voice and just overall. The only song on this album I can stand is "Wanted". Her voice is strong in it! I really hope whatever album is next, shows her FULL POTENTIAL, with straight Country songs and amazingness! :) It's wanted. :) (nopunintended)
