Album Review
Diana DeGarmo finished second on the 2004 American Idol largely due to her plucky, irrepressible spirit. She was the local girl next door who always has the desire to put on a show, and viewers responded as much to that attitude as they did to her voice. It also didn't hurt that at the age of 16, she was one of the youngest contestants on the show, and it's very likely that many members of her fan base identified with her — when they watched Diana they could see themselves up there on-stage. Released six months after the close of the show's third season (and only two weeks after 2004's winner, Fantasia Barrino, released her first album), DeGarmo's debut, Blue Skies, is halfway between Kelly Clarkson's streamlined, mature take on Ashlee Simpson's rock-tinged anthemic pop (as evidenced on her fine second album, Breakaway) and Clay Aiken's deliberately safe, milquetoast adult contemporary. Musically, it's the right direction for DeGarmo, who isn't even as hip as Justin Guarini, and the hooky songs — many written by Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks, who also contributed to Lindsay Lohan's debut album, Speak — evoke DeGarmo's rise to fame. At 17, Diana DeGarmo may be young, but the best moments here — like her best moments on the show — prove that she's a likeable, ingratiating singer, particularly when given a chance to belt out a showstopper like "Don't Cry Out Loud."
Customer Reviews
Simply amazing
This is one album you should not pass up. Diana’s voice soars, especially on the powerful ballad “Go On and Cry,” the edgy “Cardboard Castles” and the surprisingly catchy “Emotional,” the album’s first single. Famous for finishing as runner-up on the enormously popular TV show ‘American Idol,’ DeGarmo has given new meaning to the word “wow.” At only 18 (17 when she recorded ‘Blue Skies’), DeGarmo is leagues ahead of her peers such as Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson. DeGarmo covers the Melissa Manchester classic “Don’t Cry Out Loud” beautifully, and her hit single “Dreams” is also included. This album is for all ages as there is a song for all different types of people. Without question Diana DeGarmo is one of the most talented singers to rise to stardom from AI, and her future is very bright.
winner!
you should of beat fantasia because fantasia stinks! waay better! Your the winner in my book
Diana is the reason I started watching American Idol
I have read that she only done well on American Idol because people her age could relate to her, well that's nonsense, there was more than kids voting for her, I am a 51 year old man and I started watching American Idol because I was flipping channels and came across her singing and was blown away! I voted for her that nite and every week after that because I couldn't believe the talent this young girl had. She brought tears to my eyes many times listening to her sing, and I think that you should give her a listen, you will be glad you did. This is a very good CD.
