Album Review

A basic two-for-one split CD featuring two Texas blues masters, Blue on Blues is fine for newcomers to one or both of the singer/guitarists, as well as for casual fans. It's not a greatest-hits collection — neither man's signature songs, Walker's "Strollin' With Bones" or Fulson's "Reconsider Baby," appear — but each player's half-dozen offerings provide uniformly fine examples of his respective style. Walker's storming "T-Bone's Back (Back on the Scene)" is a mighty call for attention, and his extended deep blues workout "(You'll Never Find Anyone) To Be a Slave Like Me" is the blues at its most abashed. Fulson's more restrained style shines on the sly Chicago-style rocker "Henpecked" and the tender ballad "Take My Hand." Neither definitive nor necessary for completists, Blue on Blues is a perfectly serviceable compilation.

Lowell Fulson recorded every shade of blues imaginable. Polished urban blues, rustic two-guitar duets with his younger brother Martin, funk-tinged grooves that pierced the mid-'60s charts, even an unwise cover of the Beatles' "Why Don't We Do It in the Road!" Clearly, the veteran guitarist, who was active for more than half-a-century, wasn't afraid to experiment. Perhaps that's...
