Album Review

Largely made up of de-/re-constructed songs from the self-titled Woven Hand album, David Eugene Edwards creates a whole new (though similarly sinister) experience with Blush Music. Commissioned by the Belgian avant dance company Ultima Vez, Blush Music stretches out the previously released songs, adding interludes of incidental music and found-sound collages. The result is something similar to a film score that is best listened to all the way through in a single sitting. Edwards' cover of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" gets a reprise. This time menacing bird caws, distant voices, what sounds like a crackling fire, and a raga-like banjo make for a deeply affecting 14-minute mini-epic of psychedelic gospel-folk. The ultimate track, "Story and Pictures" (which also appeared on the first Woven Hand disc in different form), is maybe the best piece of music Edwards has ever recorded. Heartbreaking yet strangely uplifting, the song uses a simple piano figure, an acoustic guitar strum, and Edwards' haunted (or haunting) vocals to communicate a dark, almost mystical beauty.

Haunting, Beautiful, Genius

David Eugene Edwards (formerly of 16 Horsepower) really is a musical genius. His perspective on religion and life are all about being bent but not broken. His music makes you feel conflicted and haunts you with a primal but pensive tone. You feel as though you have arrived at judgement day and all the happy-go-lucky moments of life are replaced by serious and condemning mini-sermons. You can like upbeat, U2-esque music and still like Woven Hand or 16 Horsepower, it's just it's own thing and should not be compared to most music. If you want to reflect and examine yourself honestly, this music is worth a listen. Soul stirring, to say the least.

dark and beautiful

Blush Music is the album that introduced me to Wovenhand and I it just blew me away. Timeless as Joy Division and drawing from the same well of dark emotions. The music has the attention to detail that we see in Radiohead and has a similar feeling of narrative in the tracks. David Eugene Edwards beautiful lyrics combine with atmospheric sound samples, inventive use of instruments and beautiful heart breaking melodies to make a classic album.

the man from 16 Horsepower does it again...

I like this one far better than his previous album. The soundscapes added to some of the tracks are unforgettable. You can completely lose yourself in them.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

David Eugene Edwards, the enigmatic frontman and visionary for 16 Horsepower, began recording under the Woven Hand moniker while Horsepower was on hiatus in 2001. (The name "Woven Hand" references two hands clasped in prayer, an image that points to the consistent theme of Christianity in Edwards' music.) Building on the same stylistic threads that informed 16 Horsepower — e.g., incendiary gospel, hallowed folk, and mordant tones infused with a high, dark theatricality worthy of Nick Cave —...
