Album Review

The image on the cover of Body Language perfectly depicts the sound of Monotonix: a kick drum shooting an explosion of fuzz into the sky. Starting with a single note bashed out for 30 seconds before flipping into a slithering groove, Israel's loudest band fills a six-song EP with fuzzy guitar riffs and explosive drums in a beefed up style of rock & roll that encapsulates the fervor of Stooges/MC5 style garage punk along with the powerful riffage of classic rock lords Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, and Led Zeppelin. It's a whole lotta sound and energy to come out of a mere threesome, with guitarist Yonatan Gat and drummer Ran Shimoni banging out barbaric licks to make heads bang and teeth rattle, while vocalist Ami Shalev groans, yelps, and howls spastically. In a wise choice, producer Tim Green of the F*****g Champs doesn't add any studio polish to their performances, and instead tries to capture the spirit and raw power of their live show, the band's selling point. Notoriously crazed performances of the past have involved a sweat-drenched Shalev disassembling Shimoni's kit in the middle of "On the Road," passing pieces to the audience, to which the drummer responded by climbing aboard to play a drum solo while perched on a kick drum riding the hands of the crowd. This is the sort of stunt that outshines the music, but for a band renowned as a crazed circus act, their music packs a hefty wallop, even in a short dose. More! More! More!

Rocked The Conservatory in OKC

Just saw them play tonight, greatest show I've seen, better than Gogol Bordello, I've never seen a band command a crowd like this before, we ended up listening to them outside the bar, held the drummer above our heads while he played the drums, held the lead singer above our heads while he played a drum, got beer splattered on me, saw them play on the bar, forced to sit on the floor only to explode in cheers and dancing, simply incredible and it was an amazing, amazing show, can't believe I nearly stayed in, if you don't buy this album definetely see this band live no matter what your musical preference, Truly not to be missed.

completely insane

Just saw Monotonix in Portland, OR last night. It was by far the craziest, uncontrolled, crowd surfing in a garbage can, hanging from the fire sprinklers, setting drums up on the bar, aural assault I've seen in a long time. See them in a dark hot basement if you get the chance!

Holy Crap!

Im really diggin this stuff! I wish they had a bass guitarist, but thats okay, their still good! Body Language, Summers and Autumns, and Lowest Dive are my favorits on this album, but the rest is good too, just not quit as good, but still good! Ya know?!

Biography

Formed: 2005 in Tel Aviv, Israel

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Dissatisfied with the state of the music scene in their hometown of Tel Aviv, the Israeli trio Monotonix formed in November of 2005 with the mission of redefining the rock show. The band, consisting of singer Ami Shalev, guitarist Yonatan Gat, and drummer Ran Shimoni, channels the riff-heavy influences of Led Zeppelin, the Sonics, and Thin Lizzy to create raw, driving rock & roll. Shortly after forming, they would accomplish their mission in Tel Aviv, defying the expectations of what a rock show...
