Album Review

Five years after debuting with a few rhymes on Jeru's The Sun Rises in the East, Afu-Ra released his full-length debut, Body of the Life Force. Though his first single, 1998's "Whirlwind Thru Cities" (also included here), shows the influence of Jeru, elsewhere he's definitely his own man. Optimistic and spiritual where Jeru was aggressive and metaphysical, Afu-Ra has dozens of good lyrical ideas, though he often phrases the same way, with a heavy focus on multiple internal rhymes à la Rakim. Fortunately, there's a parade of solid productions lending variety, led by Muggs on "Soul Assassination" and DJ Premier on "Mic Stance" and "Defeat." Afu-Ra also invited a few guests, and the collaborations are welcome: GZA matches wits on "Bigacts Littleacts," Cocoa Brovaz and Jahdan show up on "D&D Soundclash" (Afu-Ra's salute to his roots at the legendary D&D Studios), and Wu-Tang's Masta Killa leads him into hardcore territory for "Mortal Kombat."

dope...

This is Afu's first album and it is pretty solid. Premier did about a quarter of the album. Tracks like "Defeat", "Mic Stance", "Equality", and "Whirlind Thru Cities" are all definite bangers. My personal favorite is "Monotony"-Is Premier serious with that beat?! That beat is insane!!! Premo is the production God!!

very good album

amazing, disciple of Jeru the damaja, amazing production, mainly from Dj Premier I belive. ONE PROBLEM Though. This is not the correct album cover. This is the album cover for Life Force Radio. The real album cover is blue and has afu in a fighting stance. whatever though. it doesnt take away from this amazing album

Deep Album

Very excellent production, and I love his voice + delivery. However this is the wrong album cover for these tracks... That album cover is for "Life Force Radio", a completely different album.

Biography

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

From his 1994 breakout on Jeru the Damaja's "Mental Stamina," Afu-Ra has fused classic East Coast hardcore with the sensitive, intelligent wordplay expected from a committed Rastafarian. He started out much like any other young New York rapper, though his rhymes impressed Jeru the Damaja enough to include him on his debut. Becoming a Jeru protégé (just as Jeru had come up with Gang Starr), Afu-Ra appeared on the second Jeru album (Wrath of the Math) as well, but moved out on his own for the 1998...
