Album Review

Boggy Depot finds Jerry Cantrell in an interesting position. Unlike most famous musicians launching a solo career, Cantrell is a reluctant solo artist. If he had a choice, it's clear he would have recorded most of the material on Boggy Depot with Alice in Chains and tour it with the band, but Layne Staley's inertia, poor health, and personal problems meant that the band couldn't function as a normal working group. Instead of holing up, Cantrell made a solo album that's an Alice album by any other name. Everything that an Alice fan has loved, particularly the morose atmosphere and the dark, grinding guitars, is here in spades. There are certain individual touches to be sure — since Cantrell hasn't been a studio in a while, he feels compelled to drag all the songs out a little bit too long with guitar solos — but it's not far removed from what he's done in the past. Boggy Depot doesn't have the psychological weight of Dirt, Alice's best album, but it comes close to replicating the sound. And for some fans, that might be enough, especially since they'll actually get to see Cantrell in concert and get new records on a fairly regular basis.

Yay for solo efforts...

I love both of Jerry's solo albums. This one came first and seemed a little stretched out, but it's still a great buy, and something that's in my playlist regularly. Dickeye - 101/10 Third favorite. Cut You In - 11/10 Best track on here. My Song - 10/10 Great listen. Settling Down - 9/10 Probably my least favorite track on here. Still awesome, though. Breaks My Back - 10/10 Underrated track. Sounds like he's singing underwater. Jesus Hands - 10/10 Heavy song with an awesome chorus. Devil By His Side - 10/10 Another highlight. Keep the Light On - 10/10 A personal fave. Satisfy - 10/10 Great track. Hurt a Long Time - 11/10 I LOVE this track. Between - 10/10 Cool country-ish tune. Cold Piece - 10/10 I love the feeling of this song...dunno why. 122/120 = Amazing. <3

Probably one of my favorite albums...

I'm a big Alice in Chains fans, so when I learned that Cantrell had a solo career, I lept at it. Cantrell, though he's no where near Layne when it comes to vocals, has a great voice, and the riffs are terrific. the best songs are definitely My Song and Cut You In, but Dickeye will always be one of my favorites. This is one of those albums I can't get tired of. Buy it; trust me.

Awesome

Great, real quick two best songs that anyone would love, Cut You In and My Song.

Jerry Cantrell first came to prominence as a member of Alice in Chains, one of the prototypical Seattle grunge bands. With their 1990 debut Facelift, the quartet scored a surprise hit with the ultra-heavy "Man in the Box," and haven't looked back since. Racking up such hit albums as 1992's Dirt and 1995's self-titled release, the band rose to the top of the alterna-metal heap. Lead singer Layne Staley couldn't cope with the pressure of their enormous success, and sank further and further into substance...
