iTunes Review

It was the folk music world of the ‘60s that gave Judy Collins her first success, and she pays tribute to that era while further exploring a timeless adult contemporary art song that belongs to her alone. She’s immune to trends. Whether she’s working through Joni Mitchell’s “Cactus Tree” (with Shawn Colvin) or singing through “Pure Imagination” (a tune from the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack), she brings her unique sensibility and sensitivity to bear. This album was mostly inspired by her recollections of the ‘60s Laurel Canyon scene, though the emotionally charged “In the Twilight” is a remembrance of her childhood and a tribute to her mother, who passed the previous year. As a peerless singer, Collins shows no signs of slowing or of age. Her voice is as clear and expressive on “Pastures of Plenty” as it would’ve been 50 years prior. Her cover of former Woodstock-based songwriter Michael Veitch’s “Veteran’s Day” is a brilliant distillation of her consistently relevant values and sentiments.

Just wonderful!

Judy Collins's voice is once again breaking the sound barrier. I don't understand the classification of ROCK that iTunes has given this album. They should have just said wonderful!

Amazing voice!!

We heard her in Leadville, Co this fall. She sang In the Twilight, the song about her Mom. Everyone was crying and I new I had to get this new song! What a beautiful clear and strong voice for someone in her 70's. Morocco is wonderful and so is Wings of Angels. I am glad I bought the whole album!

Gorgeous and melancholic

This is a classic Judy Collins album -- gorgeous and melancholic. Isolation -- whether by life choices or other -- is a common theme throughout the album. Joni Mitchell's Cactus Tree (a duet with Shawn Colvin), Jacque Brel's The Desperate Ones and her own song about her mother's alzheimer's, In the Twilight are all highlights. Really, though, all the songs are strong.

At 71 Ms. Collins probably isn't collecting new fans. But old fans will love this album. It's Judy Collins at her best. And how wonderful to sound so fantastic at her age and be producing new music.

Singer Judy Collins was, along with Joan Baez, one of the two major interpretive singers to emerge from the folk revival of the late '50s and early ‘60s. Like Baez, she began singing traditional folk songs, then moved on to popularize the work of contemporary singer/songwriters, even writing her own songs occasionally. Unlike Baez, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. In a career that began...
