The Epitome of Modern Music

I find it hard to believe that people are content with today’s mainstream pop music scene when music like Bon Iver’s is present. This album is perfect in every single way. If only people would dig a little deeper into iTunes and not be afraid to discover music like this, the world would be a much better place, people’s hearts and ears more content.

Bon Iver expands, goes to new heights with this self-titled album. Mr. Vernon takes the beautiful acoustic sounds of For Emma, Forever Ago and mixes them with alluring electric guitar, soft and smooth saxophones, quiet flutes, subtle keyboard sounds, and even some banjo. There are also new drum rhythms that perfectly suit every song. All of these, paired with enticingly thought provoking and beautifully written lyrics, make Bon Iver an album to remember, to cherish, to listen to for years to come. However, this album will not be recalled for its individual tracks; they all blend together to create a masterpiece of an album, a musical venture. The location-named tracks are labeled perfectly so. Each of these conveys the listener to the city of which the song is named. All together, they make a trip of a lifetime, even if this journey is more a dream than reality. As is finishes with the strangely 80’s Peter Gabriel sounding song “Beth/Rest”, the album’s dreamlike aesthetic finally reaches its apex, and so the journey created by this album becomes truly flawless, engaging, ravishing; I could use many more adjectives to describe this album, but I’ll leave it there. I’m sure you get the picture.

Three years ago, Bon Iver captured the ears of so many with his first album. Now, with his sophomore release, I have no doubt the musical genius of Justin Vernon’s new record will do exactly the same.

Every once in a while, a voice comes through the cold dark night - pierces us in our honda civic, or toyota tacoma, where we sit - hands resting on the steering wheel - and stare at the porch light. We should go in - but we don't - because the music swoons to us - it swirls around us - and we are, for a moment - whole. This is that album. Different, as is our ever present calendar - a day, gone forever - and this music captures it. Bon Iver can send a hook around us - the falsetto - at first unsettling, but then engaging on a level we weren't aware of - he takes us on a journey - our journey. Good Bon Iver, good. Keep the music coming - don't burn out. We need you.

America

Some things that are happening in America are really ugly and annoying, but our people continue to produce beautiful art. In the end, things aren't as bad as those people on television say they are. Listen to Bon Iver.

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips. Vernon moved back to Wisconsin the winter following...
