A New Color for Sale

I'll preface this review by saying, I wish there was a four and a half star option. That said, we can move on. My friend found this CD laying at the bottom of a two dollar bin in one of our favorite record stores. This never means it's bad, also found a band called "Jawbone" there that was quite good. Anyway, We listened to it, and i haven't stopped listening to it since. Right now, I am listening to it. The stardard "Rock" instruments blend well together; Drums, Bass, Guitar, and Piano. They create an odd sound, the first thing that comes to my mind is Sufjan Stevens, they give the music that kind of "epic" feel, without the full orchestra that Sufjan has. You can tell from the moment you hear them that the band is extremely talented. Complicated rythms that never symplify and yet give off an air of relaxation. The entire band could be performing in the highest echelon of music, except for the singer. The singer isn't bad, he's average. And it shows. While his odd half singing/half talking voice fits well with the music I can't help but feel a little cheated. Maybe I'm spoiled by the likes of Sufjan, but I feel like there's something missing. This is where the hopeful "four and a half" comes in. This is great. It's not perfect, but things rarely are. The CD is a steal at ten bucks, the songs are each individually worth more than 99 cents. Buy it. IT'S WORTH YOUR TIME. The best songs on the album are easily "Treasure Sticks The Mamma (And Other Situations)," "A Song About..." and "Monkeydodoes." I wish this band would become bigger. They deserve it, you can tell they worked hard and we need this kind of music in today's pathetic tapestry of mainstream noise.

It's not the Beatles, unless it is...

Caught this band live a while back, and I really did not expect any recording to match up to their performance... So much so that I put off even checking it out until a month later when several songs were still stuck in my head. Well, the recordings do hold up quite nicely, as it turns out. If you are in the mood for some extremely catchy, quirky, fun indie rock/pop, then look no further. I'm having trouble further than describing this band other than to say that if you mixed McCartney's penchant for incredibly infectious pop melodies with Lennon's musical daring, but got something isn't the Beatles (and doesn't necessarily sound like them, either), then you probably got Colorstore instead.
