Album Review
David + David's Boomtown is a hard look at urban life in the 1980s, a time when many were fulfilling the American Dream of financial success and upward mobility. It is not an easy album to listen to, as the characters depicted in the songs are often dealing with major problems such as drugs and domestic violence. But it is an artful record, full of poetry and convincing stories of the hard times that many silently endured. At times the record is full of pop hooks, and at other stages a more bleak sound dominates. The vocals of David + David are also effective in telling the tales, as often there is a shrill, despondent quality that complements what is being related to the listener. In particular, the drums have kind of a hushed sound to them, and the guitars often purvey sounds of doom through distortion or other means. "Welcome to the Boomtown" is the hit off the album, and is one of various cuts that convincingly detail the many trials of the characters such as Kevin, who "deals dope out of Denny's keeps a table in the back." Although there are often hints of hope and seemingly a sense of compassion toward the subjects in the songs, it is not apparent that most will eventually pull themselves out of their predicaments. One may not want to listen to this record to lift the spirit, but it is a strong reminder of difficult situations faced during what can be perceived by many as the best of times.

Boomtown...a true classic
I burned through a couple of copies of Boomtown on cassette listening in my car back in the 80's and into the 90's. I remember driving 4 to 6 hours every weekend to see my girlfriend and listening to it several times straight through. I have never tired of this collection of stories. As I listen I always look forward to Ain't So Easy and Swimming in the Ocean, but my favorite track is Being Alone Together. (I really like the part in that one where David Baerwald says that his "little sister told him that he's better off this way...") Great writing. Great tunes. A classic!
Remarkable and Timeless...
Back when this album first came out and everyone had gone synth-and-sample crazy, this acoustically-driven project was like a cold, bracing slap in the face for your ears. A huge hit on alternative and college stations, it finally broke through with the hit "Welcome To The Boomtown." Not the most happy listening experience as the review indicates, it nevertheless was a panoramic showcase for the songwriting and storytelling skills of producers/performers David Baerwald and David Ricketts, who would later present the world with the unique voice of singer Toni Childs, amongst other projects they worked on together and separately. I wish they had done more as a team; I would've loved to have heard where they were going next. In any case, this album still sounds like a group that put it together in their home studio just a couple of weeks ago, and still has a raw freshness to it that many artists lack these days.
The GREAT overlooked album of the 80s
Thank goodness this one was finally reisssued. An 80s version of "Hotel California" but sung from the other side of the tracks. The characters here are not the pretty boys and girls speeding down Life's fast lane but the dope dealers, the wife beaters, the failed dancers just struggling to hang on. The openning hallow echo of the guitar still send chills down my spine...... this is a close to a Nathaniel West novel that rock ever came.
