Album Review

Here is another LP helping from the Keith Jarrett "American" Quartet's last recording session — one that is almost as consistent in quality as its predecessor. The happy-go-lucky groove of the title track perfectly expresses its name, with Jarrett blithely singing along; both Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden get plenty of solo space on Redman's "Gotta Get Some Sleep" and Haden's "Pocket Full of Cherry" (a pun referring to Haden cohort Don Cherry); and Paul Motian remains a marvelously flexible drummer. Moreover, there is another fascinating swatch of Middle Eastern experimentation on "Pyramids Moving." ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Bop-Be

When I first heard this album almost 30 years ago, I found it to be a disappointment in comparison with other more "European" influenced Jarrett efforts, such as the excellent "My Song" on ECM. First impressions can be mistaken. "Bop-Be" features Keith Jarrett's "American" band. This is a freer, more experimental Jarrett album. While it contains plenty of Jarrett at his lyrical best, it also ventures much more into the avant-garde. At times, the album seems highly influenced by such avant-garde masters as Ornette Coleman (Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden both spent time in Coleman's bands), and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. It is refreshing to hear a musician so youthful, daring and committed to making new music. Jarrett is even heard playing soprano sax on a few cuts. I highly recommend this album.

One of the most significant pianists to emerge since the 1960s, Keith Jarrett maintained a career that went through several phases. He gained international fame for his solo concerts, which found him spontaneously improvising all of the music without any prior planning, but he also led a couple of dynamic quartets/quintets, performed classical music, and later played explorative versions of standards with his longtime trio. Although his tendency to "sing...
