iTunes Review

John McCauley’s new line-up of musicians, along with a few more years of living under his belt, results in a more accomplished sound on here, just in time for all those new, curious fans sniffing around. McCauley’s past efforts indicated a clear affection for country-tinted indie rock, a little rough around the edges and smelling of sour beer and sweat. His voice still sounds like he’s got a dusty boot pressed to his throat, but he’s singing more from the gut on the rave-up “Straight Into a Storm” and the newly refined version of “Art Isn’t Real,” and the band has a smoother feel. The desert baked “Easy” is a gloriously easy-to-love track, and should draw fans of artists like Wilco and Drive-By Truckers, not to mention Bob Dylan, who is clearly an influence. The appearance of Liz Isenberg on the love-gone-wrong ho-down “Friday XIII” (the spirit of Johnny Cash lives!) is sheer delight, her girlish trill against McCauley’s whiskey-throated warble making for a delicious pairing. “Stung” is a swaying, heartwrenching ballad, which gives way, eventually, to a “buried” live version of the folk standard, “Irene, Goodnight,” one of many beautiful surprises on this accomplished outing.

Customer Reviews

Great, but are some folks getting gipped?

This album is terrific from start to finish. Easy ounds like Astral Weeks era Van Morrison fronting Whiskeytown. But why is it that when you search for the album iTunes offers only 9 songs, but if you click through the artist you get the full 13 plus artwork? I think some fans maybe getting a partial album and iTunes ought to fix it.

Music At It's Best..

Please people do yourself a favor and buy this. Im a little shoked at the price, It's very short. The good thing is its well worth it. I wonder who the girl is in Friday XIII, she has a really pretty voice, I like it. Smith Hill is just great. Its the best song i've heard in awhile. Houston TX is also great. You gotta buy the whole album though, its all good an easily no skip-overs. I can't wait to be in the Red River Gorge Ky looking up at the stars listening to this.(this is good camping music) What a great follow up to War Elephant, and no sophomore slump. Excited for flag day, Fireworks, Beer and Deer Tick.

iTunes stinks!

WTF! Where's the full album? Tried to buy the album yesterday but recieved an error today the extra tracks are missing!
