Disappointment is almost impossible.
If it were debatable before, that Toumani Diabate is the World's greatest kora player, this album is sure to end such a debate. Boulevard de l'independence is not as purely kora as "New Ancient Strings" or "In the Heart of the Moon" but he/she that looketh for the Kora in this compilation will surely find it embedded beneath what will strike many a listener as modern african sound. "Tapha Niang" will still mesmerize even the most hardcore Kora fan while "Africa Challenge" will surely challenge the Latin American Lord's of merengue.
Balance = Symmetry
Perhaps it is with balance in mind that Toumani Diabate released Boulevard after Grammy Award winning In The Heart of The Moon. Look at the artwork,,, words radiating from the headphone clad Toumani in a very symmetric & colorful pattern. What a great image for this CD. Boulevard is a 180 degree turn from In The Heart of the Moon but may well win a grammy award this year. Check out songs; Toumani, Single, Ya Fama, Boulevard de I'independance and Africa Challenge to get a taste of modern musical intensity. Great tunes from top to bottom. What a bargain....
