iTunes Review
U2’s 1980 debut album announced a band with a distinctive sonic tone and major ambitions. Guitarist Dave “The Edge” Evans had his basic chiming attack in place, the rhythm section of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. was capable of tense, propulsive motion, and singer Paul “Bono” Hewson knew how to scale the castle walls, mountainside, and whatever romantic terrain he needed to in order to reach the soulful aspirations of youth. And producer Steve Lillywhite ensured the band’s vision got to tape. “I Will Follow” was an immediate anthem, but the tight frisson of “An Cat Dubh,” the driving attack that alternates with moments of pastoral reflection in “Out of Control,” and the carefully placed dramatic guitar notes that chase “Stories for Boys“ make this a more than impressive debut.
Customer Reviews
Solid Debut, but not amazing.
Don't listen to this album expecting Achtung Baby or Joshua Tree. This album is good, don't get me wrong, but not even close to their best. Here's my song-by-song breakdown! 1) I Will Follow: 10/10 A very fun and addicting song that gets stuck in your head for hours! Takes prize as best song on Boy. 2) Twilight: 8/10 The lyrics are a little creepy, but still a great song. 3) An Cat Dubh: 9/10 Very mysterious and dark, almost sounds like something from Achtung Baby! 4) Into The Heart: 4/10 Seriously boring and pointless end to An Cat Dubh. If you are buying single songs, skip this one. 5) Out of Control: 9/10 A very fun, upbeat song that is refreshing after 8 minutes of a darker sound. 6) Stories for Boys: 7/10 An OK song that never really stuck out to me. 7) The Ocean: 4/10 A very boring and short song that I recommend skipping. 8) A Day Without Me: 8/10 Back to the upbeat style that Out of Control had. Unfortunatly, the song isn't as good. 9) Another Time Another Place: 6/10 Very forgettable. 10) The Electric Co: 9/10 A great song that is 2nd best on the album. 11) Shadows and Tall Trees: 7/10 One of the few upbeat ending songs on a U2 album. Just OK. Overall, this is a great album, until you realize that U2 has done much, much better.
Stories of Boys
A great album. A must have.
U2's debut.
Arcai in. Despite this being a definite five-star record, it is not U2's best. However, it IS their debut album, so you can't expect them to be magnificent on the first try. The Edge's guitar is elegant and energetic, and Bono's vocals and majestic and theatrical. One thing I've always liked about U2 is the acoustics on their albums, as well as the technical effects used in the backround. Good points and bad points: Good: *Unique guitar solos *Smooth vocals *Good technical production *Catchy and energetic sound Bad: *Whiny undertones from Bono *Occasionally cheesy lyrics *Repetetive verses on some songs *An Cat Dubh should be 6:16, not 4:46 (exactly 1:30 shorter) Great songs:I Will Follow, Twilight, Out of Control, A Day Without Me, Another Time Another Place, The Electric Co. Good songs:An Cat Dubh, Into the Heart, Stories for Boys, Shadows and Tall Trees Bad songs:The Ocean Best song: I Will Follow I give U2's debut album five stars. This is my second U2 album, and I will listen to October next. I'll have time to listen to it because it's a snow day. Arcai out-- 1-7-2008 I give U2's debut album, Boy, five stars.
