iTunes Review

The daughter of a Methodist minister and a former wild child, Tori Amos struggles with the patriarchal world at large and gently rages with her own indulgent fantasies on her third album, 1996’s Boys for Pele. Strong with Kate Bush influenced piano ballads and infused with her own fantastic imagination, Amos settles at her piano and harpsichord and lets it bleed without ever spilling an ounce of blood. Her carefully manicured tunes add strings, a gospel choir, and New Orleans brass to flesh out her idiosyncratic and incredibly personal recountings of a life lived in struggle. There’s an eerie creepiness to these subdued and skewered tunes. “Horses” begins gently and “Blood Roses” flows with a steady pulse until it nears its close and Amos starts to warble defiantly against its tidy gait. The X-rated chorus and haunted house funk of “Professional Widow” brings pause while the orchestrated purr of “Putting the Damage On” explores co-dependent relationships with refreshing frankness. Amos does nothing the easy way, challenging her audience with unconventional approaches to some difficult subjects.

An etherial trip

On Pele, Tori Amos forgets about crafting radio hits or pleasing her peers... this is an artist's album. It's filled with deeply emotional songs, experimental production techniques and enough drama to drown out all the demons in the room. From the haunting Horses to the unapologetic Professional Widow, Amos proves that a woman scorned is something to be both feared and admired. This is her most inspired work to date, and it should be in any Toriphile's CD or MP3 collection.

Okay but not a fan of the changes

This ablum is basicly the U.K. special version of Boys for Pele and it's missing one of the songs I actually love "In The Springtime Of His Voodoo." Other then the lack of one of the songs it's still a good title with a slight change to Talula. Would have liked to see the orginal CD release as an option but this one is still okay.

A Mastrerpiece.

Boys For Pele stood out amongst a sea of "just albums" the year it was released, the only other group to be matching the effort of bringing 'concept albums' back into the fold were The Smashing Pumpkins with thier double disc release "Melon Collie & The Infinite Sadness". But this album is brilliant for a number of reasons, vicious lyrics, incredible sound engineering, and it unfolds like a story with many puzzles and riddles and in true Tori fashion, endless metaphors. Her voice stands out on this album from a breathy approach and regarding her listeners, she certainly trims the fat here. It's my belief that people who don't like this album just don't have deep enough thoughts worth exploring that these tunes can invoke. "Chickens get a taste of your meat..." - The most literal metaphor yet. Also, 'Boys For Pele' is perhaps the best medicine for people going through difficult relationship issues that need to be put to rest. It's a funeral, a wake up call, and a gut-wrencher if you really listen to it. I hated this album and was so disspointed for the first few weeks I had it..now, it's my favourite of all time, and I measure her work by this album's standards. Besides, who do you know brought a Harpsichord to rock out?

Biography

Born: August 22, 1963 in Newton, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s while reestablishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album Little...
