Album Review

If Ben Folds Five were reincarnated in the emo era as a quartet (adding a guitarist to their piano trio sound), they would sound remarkably like the young Minneapolis band Dropping Daylight. In his normal register, singer and pianist Sebastian Davin has an uncanny vocal similarity to Folds, a sweet '70s AM pop-style voice with an effective falsetto, but he has an annoying tendency to go all Scott Stapp on the choruses, that bombastic bellow (always accompanied by big distorted guitar lines) that says that this band really Means It, Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. In fact, Seth Davin's effects-heavy guitar lines often sound bizarrely out of place in his brother's songs, as if they were dropped into already complete arrangements to appeal to current popular music trends. The best songs on Brace Yourself, like "Apologies" and "Lucy," are smart and smart-alecky pop/rock tunes that would be better suited by a more subdued production style that wasn't paying so much attention to the current state of modern rock radio. There's much to be said for non-conformity, but Dropping Daylight don't quite have the nerve for that step yet.

We've Come This Far, Not Backing Down.

I saw these guys live. They were supporting Breaking Benjamin, on 8.29.06. It was a great concert, and Dropping Daylight was the greatest of the supporting bands (there were two others: Transfusion M, and Evans Blue). The only song I can remember them playing live is "War Song", and I only remember that because Sebastian (Davin, pianos and vocals) announced it before he started playing. Getting away from that, Dropping Daylight is a piano-baised band out of Minnesota hoping to give that state a better rep. I really can't mention all the songs. I'd take up too much space talking about all of them. I'll start out with the first single "Tell Me". It combines hard rock guitars, and at one point, slow melodys (they have a pian break at the end of the first verse). It's a good way to start out the album, and a great first single. "Brace Yourself", "Waiting Through the Afternoon", and "Apologies" should all get their own little segmant, but really, I can't find words to describe them. "Brace Yourself" is quick with shining pianos, "Waiting Through the Afternoon" has an insane hook ("Without a place to call home/We're bound to walk these streets alone/Waiting through the afternoon again"). "Apologies" is just overall catchy. "Lucy" isn't a song about any girl. If you listen to the lyrics, you'll hear "But tonight, while safely asleep/I've fallen into this dream/Yeah..." This song is about a dream (or fantasy) that Sebastian had about Ms. Lucy Liu. The lyrics are catchy, and well writing, with lots of imagery. "Answering Our Prayers" has a softer, more mellow side. I didn't like this song at first, but it grew rapidly. "Til You Feel Something" is repeptitive is fun to sing along to, and the piano has some fun too. Sebastian contributed some vocals to Breaking Benjamin's album "Phobia", like on the acoustic version of "The Diary of Jane", at the end of "Dance With The Devil" and "You Fight Me". But I've been talking about Sebastian so much...I must really say that the whole band is very good, and trust me, you will want to find out about this guys early, because they're close to success. They're talented, and the piano is a refreshing to hear in some hard rock. These guys need more radio play, they deserve it.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Minneapolis, MN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Dropping Daylight are very much part of the post-emo era of American indie rock, with songs that favor anthemic choruses and jagged, distorted guitar parts. However, at the same time, the young Minneapolis quartet are in some ways a throwback to a time about decade prior to their early-2000s birth: leader Sebastian Davin's clever lyrics, rhythmic piano lines, and smooth '70s AM radio pop vocal style strongly recall one-time alternative rock favorites like Ben Folds Five, the Eels, the New Radicals...
