Customer Reviews

Don't listen to the two idiots who gave one star.

This set does have all the tracks. Nothing is missing. And the guy who claims to be "SANE" is obviously not. This is wonderful music well-played.

rubbersoul55 is technically correct, but misses the point

This boxed set contains "truncated" versions of two pieces—one section of Op. 18 and one section of Op. 111. Apparently the arranger of the music when it was originally recorded decided to omit repeats of certain sections in the two truncated pieces, perhaps because in the vinyl days you could only squeeze so much on one side of a disc.

You can check for yourself by comparing the timings of the first track of Op. 111 on this recording (shorter) with the length of the same track on a more recent recording: Verdi Quartet with guests from the old Melos Quartet have released a CD on Hänssler of these VERY TWO pieces that include the repeats (Op. 18 and Op. 111).

HOWEVER, these omissions of repeats in the two tracks aside, on THIS recording (the Amadeus Quartet's boxed set on Deutsche Grammophon whose comments and reviews you're reading right now) the production work, recording, arrangements, performance, sonic floor, interpretation, feeling, vigor, and sensitivity of this music so far surpasses that of the recently released Verdi Quartet performing Op. 18 and Op. 111 in their "entirety" that it is not even worth the trouble to buy both recordings and "substitute in" the complete versions of those two truncated tracks. IMHO, the Verdi Quartet recording sounds like garbage.

This Amadeus Quartet boxed set album is the one to get. Just buy it! 49 tracks for $30 of the most beautifully played and recorded Brahms that I have heard in years (despite this being an arguably "old" recording). Do what I'm about to do—hit the "Buy Album" button—and this amazing work will become part of your collection and bring you joy for YEARS to come every time you listen to it.

And believe it or not, I say ALL of the above even though I'm not even a Brahms fan! (preferring Debussy, Mahler, Bartok, the Lockenhaus festival recordings on ECM New Series, Arvo Part, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Schulman, etc.) Go figure.

Amazing music has a way of changing taste, musical horizons, and even how the heart sees life.

DO NOT BUY

This album is missing tracks. No one wants to spend money on half a song.
