Rich and Robust Tone, Brilliant Interpretations
This is a timeless performance of these marvelous works by a brilliant young performer, Stefan Jackiw, with the estimable Max Levinson on the piano.
The incisiveness of every phrase, and the beauty of the tone that Jackiw achieves, bring out both the lush romanticism and the sparkling classicism of this amazing composer's sonatas. Just a listen to one of the samples will illustrate these startling complementary qualities.
Josef Suk and Julius Katchen used to be my signal recording of these works. Jackiw and Levinson now match them , and may even exceed that great recording for insight and a movng personal take on the works.
Miraculous. More please!!!
From the first notes of the Second Sonata my heart was all but satisfied. I relaxed and took a long breath as I continued to listen to the end of the last movement, in utter joy at the miraculous playing of Stefan Jackiw and Max Levinson in these works. I hadn't heard a violinist in many years who so took my breath away with plush, ample tone, phrasing free of any mannerism but deeply, personally expressive. I think of Josef Suk as does another reviewer, but also David Oistrakh, two paradigms of violin performance. Levinson's collaborative role is equally impressive. These are great musicians and formidable collaborators. I hope to hear much more from Jackiw and Levinson in months and years ahead: Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, and the best of emerging composers. What a find. I'm so happy and excited to have stumbled on this album. Five Stars may not yet be enough, but will have to do for the present.
absolutely beautiful
absolutely brilliant.
