Disappointing. Go for von Karajan or Kleiber
I was delighted by Ms. Alsop's interpretation of the Roy Harris 3rd and 4th, so I thought I would give this recording of Brahms 4 a try. Unfortunately, this is a very weak performance. The orchestra sounds lethargic, stilted, and heavy. In particular, the allegro non troppo and the andante are lumbering--the the allegro non troppo is played too slowly, and the orchestra lacks energy. The joyous moments in the symphony, especially in the allegro giocoso, lack vivacity. The symphony ends in the fourth movement without triumph, but rather with a whisper. Honestly, if this was the only recording of Brahms 4 that I had ever heard, I might have written it off as a boring piece of brooding 19th century music that lacks intensity, passion, or romance. I would strongly recommend listeners to check out the von Karajan and Kleiber recordings of this piece and skip this one altogether. In all fairness, I did not download Alsop's Hungarian Dances, but based on the 30 second iTunes previews, these too seem to suffer from a lack of energy.

I am glad to see the Brahm's 4th symphony here on itunes. I have enjoyed the first three symphonies and I have been waiting for this one. I wish Marin good luck with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
