Album Review

Goapele’s earlier releases are not short on dreamy, slightly trippy content, but she refines and intensifies that mode on Break of Dawn, her first release since 2005’s Change It All. Her debut for the Decon label, Break of Dawn is slinking and seductive, largely switching between low-key electronic quiet storm and Southern-style throwback ballads with support from the likes of Bedrock, Malay, Krucial, Bobby Ozuna, and the duo Electric Thunderbolt. During the album’s middle third, Goapele breaks from heartache and desire, covering perseverance on the title track, motherhood on “Hush,” and love over wealth on the 1987-Prince-indebted “Money.”

she's so under rated ...real music

Phenominal Album

Goapele brings another piece together of such a consistent bravado. Her voice since CLOSER has been a gift to the ranks of one of the strongest voices in the R&B game. This new offering is no exception by one. She has only gotten better and this disc is such a powerhouse of thought, love and romance grouding in a neo soul feel of confidence oozing sexuality through sensuality. Yes, she is a pretty woman and so gorgeous... but that for the cover. You listen to the music, the disc of words through her emotions of growth to finding her footing as a mother, an independent artist and a forward thinking activist through song. Here she takes a deep breath of calm relax that still manages to sustain a cohesive flow of bluesy smokey poetic coffee house feel while still having that Oakland club thump that hits. The title track is the best song and most likely from it's strength is the reason for the album name change from Milk & Honey. Only sadness is the omission of ultimate tease she has sauntered with Don't Be Shy. Still the album is absolutely perfect and flawless with 9 awesome tracks but now we get a bonus track. Thank you Goapele for the gift of your heart and energy. Not since Maxwell's BLACK has an R&B album kept you craving longing for more and in a mad rush to repeat it all over again. A true masterwork.
