Daughtry

Daughtry

Fifth-season American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry proved that the show could produce a modern-rock singer thriving outside Idol’s pop-centric margins. Daughtry’s 2006 eponymous debut became the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history. Lead single “It’s Not Over” opens on lilting melancholy chords contrasted with post-grunge guitar distortion as Chris croons in the controlled, throaty growl that he honed while competing on Idol. The similarly catchy “Home” is an emotional power-ballad with dramatic, sweeping string arrangements and an anthemic chorus. “What I Want” kicks out Nickelback-flavored heaviness with impressive guitar work that sounds equally inspired by Soundgarden and Van Halen.
