Album Review

The rock music landscape is littered with bands circa the early 21sts century that walk the fine line between melody and rage, and the Orlando, FL-based quintet, Hand to Hand, is certainly one such band. On their 2008 limited-edition EP, Breaking the Surface, the lads alternate between hitting you hard with unmistakably hardcore-esque bits and then, seemingly out of nowhere, they'll inject some emo and some alt, while singer Robert Kellom is the kinda guy who doesn't think twice about screaming his head off or melodic crooning. Whatever the song at hand calls for, he's certainly one well-prepared man (especially on such standout tracks "Shark Week" and "Paint This Town Black"). Alternative Press anointed Hand to Hand one of their "bands to watch," and after experiencing Breaking the Surface, you can certainly detect the promise that the band possesses.

Customer Reviews

BUY this CD it is worth your allowance money!!!!

I first heard of Hand to Hand on a Lifeforce sampler that I was given a few years back. Needless to say after hearing their songs on the sampler I purchased "A perfect way to say good-bye" The CD didn't let me down with it's catchy hooks and aggressive vocals. After hearing that they had previewed new songs on their myspace account I took a listen to "Dufresne party of Six" I knew this band had grown in leaps and bounds. This EP although only 5 songs will peal the paint off the walls, and has definately set the tone for a much anticipated full length follow up. So with all that said BUY this CD it is worth your allowance money!!!!

Simply Amazing

like mixing Mentos and Coke.

You've tasted diet cola, you've tasted Mentos, but do you know what happens when you mix the two? If you don’t, go try it real quick. Hand To Hand’s Breaking The Surface is the sonic equivalent of the sticky, gooey, yet violent explosion you get when you mix unlikely things: in this case thick metal and brash emocore. This one will probably be pegged as a metal album, but it's melodic enough to pacify most mainstream listeners. These five metallic/emocore songs are catchy and buoyant. The sing/scream vocals are better than most in this genre, but what works so nicely here is the way they ricochet off the heavy, fluid guitar licks and precise double bass creating pensive and aggressive harmonies similar to Misery Signals meets Hopesfall.
