Album Review

Despite being a three time winner of It's Showtime at the Apollo, winner of the Cognac Hennesy Jazz Search and a protégé of the late Grover Washington, Jr., this Michigan based saxman may be the most accomplished player, composer and producer groove-loving smooth jazz fans have never heard of. He's also been "hiding," doing sessions and live dates over the years with everyone from Norman Brown and Will Downing to Kirk Franklin and Najee. But after three previous indie releases, his shadowy profile was bound to move to the forefront with the release of this in the pocket, gospel tinged, sensual soul-driven debut on Megawave Records. His national profile has increased these past years as he's toured with the popular guitarist Tim Bowman, who makes his crackling electric presence known on the lively, ultra-catchy and slightly retro soprano tune "Bliss." The opening title track is a joyful blend of thump, brass and catchy wordless vocals, while "Mo' Better Blues" digs deeper and shows Scott's sense of soul-jazz history, very much in the Cannonball Adderley style. For the most part, Scott keeps an even mid-tempo and romantic keel, joining straight to the heart, picture perfect (and radio ready) melodies with colorful swirls of vocals and dazzling horn sections. His gospel influences shine ever so gently through the brassy sway and Electronic Wind Instrument melody of one of the most memorable tracks, "Hope in Darkness"; other tunes like "Voyage" show off his strong flute skills and his love for more adventurous jazz. This disc, which primed the versatile saxman for breakthrough instrumental stardom, is part of a rollout of various projects that marks the Lansing, MI based Megawave's emergence onto the national scene after being a regional label for 35 years.

SmoothJazz.com Review

BREATHE is the dynamic sax player’s 4th album to date. His last release (WORDS UNSPOKEN) debuted in the Top 40 on the Smooth Jazz charts in 2002. This impressive player was the protégé of the late, great Grover Washington, Jr. who became his mentor and friend. There is no mystery as to why Grover felt a kindred spirit toward Randy Scott, as his craft is truly world class; he’s an extraordinary player and composer. BREATHE is one of my personal favorites of 2007. You have to really ‘wow’ me if you’re a saxophonist simply due to the fact that there are so many sax players in this genre… Randy Scott totally wows me. I appreciate the effortlessness he exhibits on an album filled with super deep grooves. That ease alone is masterful. He is proficient on all musical instruments and has performed and recorded with such notables as Michael Powell, Norman Brown, Angela Bofield, Ronnie Laws, Marion Meadows and many others. I think it’s important to also note that he is a three-time winner of the nationally televised, It’s Showtime at the Apollo, and winner of the Hennessy Jazz Search. BREATHE kicks off with a funk and bang with the title track and jams onward from there. Highlight tracks for us include the first single “Bliss” featuring guitarist Tim Bowman, the smooth and breezy “Imagine This” showcasing Frank McComb on piano and the moving and melodic “Hope In Darkness.” BREATHE is a breath of fresh air!

YOU HAVE TO SEE HIM LIVE!

This is a great album from start to finish. Randy is a phenomenal talent and "Breathe" has proven that once again. Grover would be proud…

ABYSSJazz Magazine Review

am soooo breathing with you, Randy Scott. As a matter of fact, with the release Breathe, I will bet the world will inhale every moment of this CD, exhaling only to absorb more of Scott’s truly outstanding collection of sax-driven contemporary to traditional jazz experience. Breathe is the ultimate summer time cruiser designed to satisfy moods ranging from upbeat to chill, a perfect combination for the grown and sexy. Breathe showcases Scott’s songwriting and production skills, not to mention, Scott is simply h*ll on the sax. All of this, along with the collaboration with guitarist Tim Bowman, made for one best and most well rounded contemporary jazz CD’s of ‘07. Randy Scott, you are definitely on the radar for future projects. But for now, I’ll just breathe.
